Farm safety recordkeeping requirements outlined for farmers

County Extension Director Jim Frier reminds farmers that if they employ even one farm worker or exchange labor with neighbors, plant operations must keep records of farm accidents and health hazards under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The regulation, in effect since July 1, 1971, requires possession of the Agriculture Recordkeeping Requirement booklet, with copies mailed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Farmers who did not receive the booklet can obtain a copy at the Washington County Extension office or write to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U S Dept of Labor, 911 Walnut Street, Room 1000, Kansas City Missouri 64106.

Solve problems of drifting snow now

Washington Evening Journal reports extending windbreaks and snow fences to control drifting snow on farms. Extension experts recommend 8 foot fences with 1 to 1.5 inch gaps or 2 inch gaps for 12 inch boards, and plan lengths based on wind fetch. A practical defense uses an L-shaped windbreak to redirect drifts and notes memory of past storms as best guide for placement.
