George S. McGovern urged a federal income supplement for all families under 12 000 a year and sweeping tax reforms to fund it. He proposed a minimum income around 1 000 per person or 4 000 per family of four, paid to those below break even, with higher earners paying more.
Washington residents faced a deep freeze with official reads of 9 below and winds near 25 mph driving the chill to around 50 below. Pedestrians hugged building sides while coats and gloves were essential. The Washington Chamber of Commerce board met at Winga's Cafe with Chuck Gibson presiding. newcomers include Richard Anderson Jim Bush and Keith Shaffer. Retiring members are Gilbert Mills Dr George Krogmeier and Walter Farrell Jr. The group plans to name a new secretary to replace Hubert Lehrer and will reconvene Monday. Volunteer firemen fought a thawing pipes fire at 927 South Second Ave around 12:30 pm. the house owned by Ken Peters suffered a momentary blaze extinguished before arrival. In Cherokee the Immaculate Conception Elementary School will close at year end due to financial pressures and fewer teaching sisters.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled the 1971 legislative reapportionment unconstitutional citing failure to achieve mathematical equality. The court will redraw districts before the June primaries, forcing all 150 legislators to seek re election under a constitutional plan.
Students at Washington Community School District will leave at 2 p.m. on Monday January 17 as teachers attend building meetings for curriculum study. Parents should plan to have children home about ninety minutes earlier than usual. regular classes resume Tuesday January 18.
Harold Hall of Crawfordsville was re elected chairman of the Washington County Conservation Board at the Annual Meeting held January 12 in the courthouse. Carroll Steinbeck of Rubio was reappointed secretary. Ralph Bringman of Wellman joins the board to fill the unexpired term of Duane Tadlock who resigned after being elected mayor of Wellman. John Davis of Ainsworth rehired as executive officer. Dennis Black of Jasper County will assist to revise the County Land Use Plan to preserve federal funding and guide park development. Marr Park camping area enlarged with trees transplanted for shade and a new latrine built. Brinton Timber Area road graded and graveled. Overall, park use trends upward toward the national average.
Washington reports the Pay Board will reimburse retroactive raises from the wage price freeze if the raise does not exceed 7 percent, effective for deferred pay during the 90 day freeze from Aug 15 to Nov 13. The panel also trims aerospace contracts, lowering the first year raise from 12.2 to 8.3 percent, with 34 cents an hour now and 17 cents in the second year. labor abstained and unions plan suit. The Price Commission also tightens utility rate rise pre-notifications for firms with annual business over $100 million.
United Press Internation reports continued fair and very cold weather in Iowa with tonight’s lows from 15 to 25 below zero and up to 5 to 15 below in the south. Saturday highs range from 0 to 8 below zero in the northeast to 5 to 1 above in the southwest.
Washington Community Schools Superintendent E K Schlapkohl substituted Thursday in Tamara Smothers’s first grade at Lincoln Elementary. He called the stint enjoyable yet joked about his certification. An Apple bow labeled substitute teacher of the year was given. He said he hopes not to teach first grade again and prefers future part time work in higher grades.
Wayne E. Davis of Jones Funeral Home becomes a certified eye enucleator joining Jerry Powell of Powell Funeral Home Wellman and Warren D Lewis Stacey Lewis Funeral Home Columbus Junction in aiding eye donation efforts. The Iowa Lions Eye Bank seminar trained about 200 enrollees from 20 states to remove donor eyes within four hours of death for corneal transplants and research.
