Nancy Lee Stevens, 2, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stevens of 528 Fourteenth Street, Des Moines, was struck by a taxi as she ran in front of it while baggage was unloaded at her grandfather O. M. Stevens' home. Coroner L. H. DeFord said the skull was fractured and that the driver A Miller did not see the child.

Richard King, 11, Waterloo’s first civilian to receive penicillin injections, was reported to be recovering steadily from a serious leg infection diagnosed as osteomyelitis. He had a fever of 10514 degrees before injections obtained by special requisition from Boston, Massachusetts.

Convict Gate Escape Claim From Anamosa Reformatory
Dan E. Beam, former guard shift captain at the Iowa men's reformatory, denied he ordered the gate to open for four convicts who escaped on New Year's Day. Discharged guards Millsap Swanson and McNamara alleged Beam gave the order. Beam said the convicts directed it. He described being held hostage and later released and identified station wagon driver John Bryl among the escapees.
