In Cerro Gordo county district court a will by Mrs Nellie M Lighter of Mason City leaves $1000 to care for her parrot Max after her death. The will also bequeaths property to brothers sisters nieces and nephews. She notes the parrot has long been part of the family and was loved by her husband Charles E Lighter.
Des Moines reports that the state board of education plans to begin selling endowment fund farms soon. The University of Iowa and Iowa State College own about a dozen each, totaling 2,077 and 2,201 acres respectively. Two university farms have long been in the endowment, a 337 acre Clay county parcel and a 40 acre Calhoun county parcel, though neither is slated for sale.

District court dismisses jury for January term with possible recall later. jurors told not to appear unless notified. Judge J. G. Patterson cites no cases ready for trial. Delmar Sloan pleads guilty to malicious damage to a building. Six months jail, parole to employer Frank Andrews. He must pay $60 to $80 in damages. Patterson leaves for Oska.
Crawfordsville expects a two to three week fund drive to finance a 24x30 foot hollow tile town building. It would house a fire truck recently purchased by the town and equipment provided by the Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association. Donations may be left at the People's Savings Bank.
An unspecified court appearance notes a person plans to return to Washington for further proceedings next Monday after a loose early afternoon departure.
In Washington on January 12 Speaker Sam Rayburn voiced confidence the bill to grant mustering out pay to World War II veterans would pass this week. He said action would be completed soon after this statement.
In London reports the US Eight Air Force says 64 planes were lost in Germany yesterday with 59 bombers and five fighters missing. Allied claims of destroying over 300 German planes in the largest air battle over Germany accompany German losses and Berlin defense notes.
Preval by the house military affairs committee recommends a $390 discharge pay for veterans with 60 days or more service and $100 for under 60 days. An amendment to a senate bill would raise the pay to $200 to $500 based on length and area of service. Eligibility covers all with rank of captain or lower in the army or equivalent in other branches.
Jos eph McNulty Utterback, 75, died at six this morning of a heart attack at his Ainsworth home. Funeral arrangements are pending with L. A. Jones Funeral Home. He was born July 1, 1859 in Indiana, lived in Amboy near Ainsworth, moved to the farm home in 1880, and was married twice to Carrie Hunter and Isa Gentzler. He served on the local police force in Iowa. Burial will be in Ainsworth Cemetery after funeral at the Ainsworth Methodist church.
George Johnson was re-elected for the eighth year as manager of the Toledo Co operative Corn Canning Co. He reported 7,287 cases packed during 1943 with a gross income of 148584 dollars. A committee from Toledo and Tama counties was appointed to study installing a soybean processing plant to operate with the factory.
Mr. Utterback, a longtime resident described in a Journal obituary, leaves a wife and siblings including Leona Love of Central Point Oregon and P. E. Utterback of Oskaloosa. He joined the Three-Quarter Century club and wrote of a log cabin birth in Elizabeth Indiana and a 1864 move to town by covered wagon. He recalled ferry crossing fears and a storm during the trip.
The National Bank of Washington held its annual meeting with 754 of 800 shares represented. President R. E. Dougherty and officers were re-elected. Deposits stood at 2,601,085.66, the bank’s largest, with total resources and liabilities at 2,752,824.58. The usual dividend was paid. At a later board meeting officers were re-elected: Dougherty president Crone executive VP Weldin cashier and secretary Stewart VP and other officers and tellers were retained.
Funeral services for Frances Votruba aged 84 will be at her Richmond home Thursday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. S. C. Peterson. Burial follows in Richmond cemetery. She died Monday night at nine in Richmond. Survived by three children Adolph of Washington Charles and Mrs. Mary Horesowsky of Richmond. 11 grandchildren five great grandchildren a sister Mrs. Mary Schnurmacher of Chicago two nieces and two nephews in Chicago. Three grandsons John in the navy Staff Sergeant Dean Votruba and Sergeant Junior Votruba in the army. Preceded in death by husband Jacob.
London dispatch reports Gen. Nikolai Vatutin's 1st Army seized Sarny a rail junction inside old Poland. The operation cuts the German trunk railway linking southern and northern fronts. Stalin praised Vatutin for the victory and called Sarny a large rail junction and important German defense base.
Cairo sources report Adolf Hitler is pressing Japan to attack the Soviet Union immediately to avert a Nazi defeat on the eastern front. The move aims to divert Soviet forces and relieve pressure as the war widens in Europe and Asia.
Stiffening German resistance reported on the Russian and Italian fronts as heavy bombers strike the main Greek supply port for the German armies in the eastern Mediterranean. Farther east, 1st Army units push into over 30 towns near Sarny, 12 miles from Shepetovka, while Gen. Konev's 2nd Ukrainian Army advances in the Dnieper bend toward a junction with Vatutin.
Members of the Albert M. Huff camp of Spanish-American War Veterans met at the Congress hotel for their annual gathering and dinner. Capt. D. W. Harvey was reelected commander, with Harry Crone vice commander Hugh Hall adjutant and quartermaster Walter Crawford surgeon Dr. W. B. Crooks assistant surgeon John Moore chaplain Frank Casey sergeant at arms and trustees Clarence Schenefelt Hugh McCleery Harvey Barnes also elected to the board of trustees.
Bee Line announces a relocation of its Washington depot to 107 West Second Street the former Big Giant market building. The site will house bus line and taxi service operations under one roof with an enlarged office and waiting room. Mrs. V D named agent. John Patterson and family maintain offices at the same building.
