Iowa legislators praised Gov. William Beardsley’s agenda but doubted labor reform and union shop legalization would pass in 1951. They welcomed a sound budget and no new taxes while debating manpower, child benefits, and postwar bonuses. Inauguration ceremonies drew more than 1,000 people.
Loy Scout officials reminded residents in Washington and West Chester of a paper drive this Saturday. Trucks will depart from the office of S. W. Easter at 9 o'clock in the morning.

Ross Day of Brighton Farm Store and Max Mitchell of Mitchell's Sinclair service Crawfordsville have been named volunteer farm placement representatives for the Iowa State Employment service. They will assist the farm placement program in their communities and urge farmers and workers to contact them with needs.
Police and volunteers hunt for Bill Cook 22 accused of eight deaths in a nationwide manhunt. An army of officers roadblocks and civil air patrol planes scour the Sioux Falls area while sheriff Bar ney Boos says he is not certain Cook is present but believes he may be hiding near farms and urges farmers to arm themselves and beware strangers.
Vatican says the decree bans priests from Rotary clubs but allows lay Catholics to stay or resign with their bishops approval. It applies worldwide, targeting clubs seen as anti religious in some countries, while U S and Canada members may remain if permitted locally. Arthur Lagueux of Quebec serves as Rotary International president.
Park workmen under street commissioner Earl Little removed six trees including elms and maples in Central Park after wind and lightning damaged them. The Washington Park board approved the action to prevent hazards and allow new plantings sun and rain access. Four trees were also taken down in Sunset Park with similar conditions. The trunks and branches are being cut for fuel for residents in need.
Rev T EB White, former pastor at Washington Presbyterian, will remain at Forreston Grove Presbyterian in Forreston Illinois and not move to California despite a prior Journal report. He declined the vice presidency offer with John Brown schools in California.
UN ground troops and U S air force struck back at Wonju with 275 tons of bombs on March 9 1951 Chinese Reds retreated from a ridge two miles south of the city after heavy bombing American French Dutch and South Korean forces counterattacked within a mile of Wonju The aerial assault continued through the day with B 29s and fighters delivering the Sunday punch and forcing enemy losses downplayed by optimistic UN commander remarks.
R O Lynn 63 a resident of Columbus Junction died suddenly at his home around 6:50 pm He was a telegraph operator and station agent for the Rock Island Railway and had worked that day He is survived by his wife Vera Miller two daughters Clara Auten and Barbara Lynn a son R O Lynn Jr and three grandchildren.
R T Knottnerus Sr longtime Washington county resident died at his home at 3 o clock this morning after a yearlong decline. Funeral services set for Sunday January 14 at 3 PM at Jones funeral home with Rev Milo Phillips officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Born July 11 1863 in Ostfriesland Germany he came to the United States in 1881 and settled in Washington county later. He married Ricken Jacob Simmering on October 1 1904 and lived on the same farm in Highland Township. He belonged to St Pauls Evangelical Reformed Church. Surviving are four children Mrs Charles Brown Mrs Mela Lasek Jacob David and Reemiscus T Knottnerus Jr a sister Mrs Ann Wagenknecht and 12 grandchildren. A son Rudolph preceded him in death.
History professor George Sudermann of Parsons College advocates a 30 day halt to inductions and enlistments as the nation seeks a sound mobilization policy. He telegrammed President Truman and top officials and says Hershey sparked a stampede with early physicals. Rep. Martin says he will present the idea to Gen. Hershey.
Assistant Defense Secretary Anna M. Rosenberg announced the armed services raised their June 30 manpower goal to 3 462 205 in service, 262 205 above the previous target. President Truman approved the increase. The move implies higher draft demands for 18 year olds and a revision of manpower charts to be issued soon.
In Washington, Rear Admiral Binford warned Chinese forces massing on the mainland could strike Formosa overnight. He cited a large naval presence, rough winter seas, and UN discussions as factors, with Chiang Kai-shek’s forces on Formosa ready to resist. Another officersaid the Communist threat on Korea’s right flank has diminished significantly.
Adults are reminded of the square dance in the YMCA gymnasium tonight at an unspecified time. The public is invited. Mrs. Mabel Baldwin of Des Moines is expected to arrive tonight for a week’s visit with her sister, Lucy Dempsey.
Charles E. McLellan 81 of Washington died Thursday after a two week illness. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Rev. Polk officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Born December 8 1869 in Mt. Pleasant he moved from Burlington to Cedar Rapids then Washington. Survived by wife Cora Stephens two nieces Mrs R A Davidson and Mrs Merle Butler and nephew Paul A Smits.
Dr William J Grossheim pastor of the Presbyterian church will speak at the Sunday evening union church service in United Presbyterian church on January 14. The theme is One Commission and other local ministers will assist. Union services are held each Sunday at 7 26 oclock.
Daryl Dayton son of J bp Dayton of Washington is author of Our Contemporary Music appearing in Santa Barbara Home Life. Dayton is associate professor of music at Woman a College Claremont and an outstanding piano teacher.
State Commander Robert H. Bush and State auxiliary president Mrs. Frank Abraham spoke at a joint Washington county American Legion and auxiliary meeting in the Legion hall. Charles Hotle presided as county president. new auxiliary members were initiated and a flute trio performed. Bush warned that any future war would be a fight for survival and urged immediate civil defense preparations and an end to business as usual.
Salem youths told police they abandoned a stolen safe then returned for a second look after reading in a newspaper that it contained 512 dollars. The service at the Associate Presbyterian church begins at 7 30 with a pre service prayer meeting at 7 in the basement.

President Truman told Congress the United States must raise revenue beyond the 1950 8 billion tax boost to finance primary national security programs. He estimated costs for 1951 and 1952 may exceed 140 billion and urged pay-as-you-go funding with higher taxes and broader excises. The 7000 word economic report was read by clerks as the Senate was not in session. He planned to send a tax proposal message to Congress after consulting legislative leaders.
The government extended credit controls to almost all residential construction to curb inflation. Rules cap loan and mortgage sizes from private or government lenders, with penalties up to 5000 dollars or a year in jail for violators. Restrictions target three and four family homes and six unit buildings, but exclude hotels and started projects.
Wayne Rodgers 18 died and three other Oelwein youths were seriously injured when their car collided with a Chicago and Great Western freight train at an unguarded crossing about a mile northwest of Oelwein. The car struck an oil tank car, was pinned beneath the freight and dragged about 65 feet. rescue workers used a block and tackle from the train to free the car occupants, taking over an hour to reach Westendorf.
