The National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters in New York announces a 40 percent premium increase for auto liability and property damage on private passenger cars. The move follows higher accident rates and rising labor and material costs, based on annual company experience reports.
Diplomatic sources report new “free” movements aimed at liberating Axis dominated states including Germany Italy Japan. US officials discourage King Carol of Romania from returning to the United States while leaders like Otto Strasser Count Sforza and Charles Davila head nascent efforts in Germany Italy Romania and Japan with registration expected this week.
Arthur H. Porter of the Iowa State College extension announces Pioneer Dairy Herd Improvement Association’s December results. Pioneer herds averaged 852 pounds of milk and 31.6 pounds of butterfat per cow, with Story County in second at 790 pounds milk and 1.1 pounds butterfat, and Henry County third. Morton Emde of West Chester posted the top individual herd with 11 cows averaging 1,646 pounds of milk and 54.9 pounds of butterfat.
Davenport worker at Rock Island arsenal identified as OLru UMWA Jack Deitch. He was slugged and robbed after leaving a restaurant, losing about $15 in cash, his work card, and other items. A waiter summoned a taxi to his daughter's home, but the assailant blocked his path across Main Street and struck him. He regained consciousness and alerted police.
All Iowa extension service workers in agriculture and home economics will meet at Iowa State College on January 1 and 20 to discuss “clearing the decks for action” in the food-for-freedom campaign. RK Bliss, extension service director, announced that county agents 4 H club agents and home demonstration agents along with state staff specialists will attend. Plans aim to shelve nonessential extension projects during the war.
Police hold 18 year old Gilbert Kelley in jail on charges of stealing a wrist watch from the C. K. Biddenstadt residence by posing as a Boy Scout collecting old papers and magazines. Officers say Kelley had the watch when arrested and claimed to be a parolee from Eldora training school.
Slippery pavements from recent snow caused three auto collisions on Washington streets Saturday. Chief George Baker reported crashes involving Harry Fullerton and Joe Melinski at North Iowa avenue and East Second street with minor damage. Spencer Reed and LaVerne Graber, plus Leo Mangold and a Washington Beverage Co. truck driven by Dale Booth, were also damaged.
The Red Cross receives a new yarn supply for North Atlantic patrol knitting. Mrs. John Owen heads the project with sweaters socks and mittens. The sewing room in city hall operates daily afternoons and select evenings for distribution and instruction.
A weekend of weather changes ends the cold spell with temperatures rising to 57 degrees above zero at noon. Snow starts to melt today after yesterday’s high of 35 degrees and last night’s low of 26 degrees, ending below zero conditions.
In Washington on January 12, Bernie Bierman of Minnesota and Pat Hanley of Boston University, both reserve corps majors, prepared for active duty with the Marine Corps.
At a Saturday meeting of the Washington county agricultural defense board the group discussed absorbing available government labor onto county farms. Welfare, Farm Security, Production Credit, and employment officials joined Chair Carl Oldfield to plan registering WPA workers and NYA youths at the county employment service for farmer employment arrangements.
The Washington county selective service board issued notice lifting publication restrictions for men called to army service and published the names of those sent from the county for induction last week. Included are Dale Edmondson of Ainsworth Theodore Zeiglowsky and Lawrence Kephartz of Washington Charles Talston of West Chester Omer Bopp Everette Hays and Jacob Graves of Bloomfield. Paul Heitzman of Riverside had previously enlisted in the air corps. A further call is planned later this month but names and exact date are not yet announced.
A Washington group moves to create a state home guard in Iowa as National Guard units enter active federal service. A committee seeks three officers and then 60 recruits, targeting World War I veterans, those too young then, and younger men not currently in the army. The Y M C A meeting drew 35 to 40 attendees with Sheriff Putnam, A E Baldrige, and Chamber of Commerce head Walter Rukgaber chairing.
London reports Britain moving to hire air and naval bases in Ireland. News says Prime Minister Andrews may visit Dublin to discuss an agreement with Taoiseach de Valera. Economic concessions for belt tightening possibly tied to the deal as America enters the war.
Sumner Welles under secretary of state travels to Rio de Janeiro to attend the conference of the 21 American republics. In Washington he bids farewell to Paraguayan minister Dr Don Juan Jose Soler and Brazilian ambassador Dr Carlos Martins who will not attend the meeting.
The weekly rationing report shows 20 obsolete tires issued for use on specific old car makes outside county quotas, plus two truck tires and one tube approved. Thirteen applications were received, two tractor tire denials, one pending. Certificates issued to seven individuals include detailed tire sizes and locations in Washington, Crawfordsville, Richmond, Riverside and surrounding routes.

Cars driven by Ian Munson from the northeast and Richard E K Peters from the south sideswiped this morning at a corner east of the American Pearl button factory. Each car sustained about 40 dollars in damage. No injuries reported.
Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Juzeler, who died last week in North Dakota, are set for two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the L. A. Jones funeral home. The body is expected to arrive here this afternoon.
