Remember 1936? Below zero conditions continued in Washington Monday night with mounting commentary from those who recall the era. Thermometers in that winter stayed at or below zero for 10 days, while last night’s readings dipped from 10 to 15 below, with colder temperatures forecast as weather officials term the period bitter cold.
Firemen in Washington ready for their annual whole hog sausage and pancake meal to be served at the municipal building fire hall on Wednesday January 12 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Washington County Pork Producers assist with sausage. Tickets sold by any fireman or at meal time. Adults priced at 2.50 and children under 12 at 1.25.
A 4-H recreation leadership weekend for tenth grade and older members will run January 22 and 23 at Camp Wyoming. About sixty 4-H'ers and seven county chaperones from the Cedar Rapids area will attend with Glen Thompson presenting recreation ideas. Julia Gamon directs with Don King assisting. counselor training emphasis noted. Apply now at the County Extension Office.
The Washington County Crop Boosters plan an open meeting at 11:45 a.m. Friday at the Captain's Table in Washington to name local winners in the 1976 corn and soybean yield contests. Thurman Gaskill, president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, will speak. Keith Horn is chairman and Marc Knapp secretary.
Cherokee Iowa the city council will discuss a possible curfew amid a spate of vandalism. Police reported 23 incidents Saturday and Sunday including broken windows shattered windshields and damage to homes businesses stations and a school. Damages may exceed 1000 as night patrols and weekend surveillance are planned.
Washington High School concert bands will perform a free program Monday January 17 at 8 p m in the school auditorium. Directed by Robert Shepherd the bands mark their first home concert of the year with the Concert Band playing works from English and French wind repertoire including Jadin s Overture in F Byrd Suite and Holst First Suite in E flat. the Jazz Band will offer selections for upcoming festival appearances.
In Aspen Colorado entertainer Claudine Longet shows emotion as witnesses recount that she shot her lover with a .22 caliber pistol with a faulty safety catch. Prosecutors say Longet fired the fatal shot. she remains composed during the testimony.
United Press International reports Iowa endures an Arctic spell with temperatures down to 30 below zero. No. 1 heating fuel runs short as natural gas curtailments push buyers to fuel oil, while No. 2 supplies remain adequate. Suppliers warn shipments lag and some terminals run dry under the strain of extreme cold.
DES MOINES UPI Governor Robert D Ray urged the 1977 Iowa Legislature to practice disciplined spending, warn of times to say no to new programs, and outline a plan to streamline state government. He pressed for property tax relief, environmental action, and protection of human needs amid rising Medicaid costs and road funding needs.
The Washington area issued 123 building permits in 1976 with an estimated total value of 3,283,044 dollars. Major projects included the U.S. Army Reserve Center, National Bank building, and a Perfex industrial plant addition, accounting for over two thirds of the value. There were 20 homes, 56 garages, two apartment buildings, and 35 other projects, with total permits higher than 1975’s 118 permits valued at about 2.5 million dollars.
Cold air settles tonight with a low around 10 below zero and increasing clouds. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 10 above and northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.
The 4-H United Service Program for 1977 is active in Washington County with clubs discussing the effort in meetings through February and March. The program combines support for the Iowa 4-H Foundation the National 4-H Center and the IFYE exchange, with funds split at clubs’ discretion. The state 4-H Council promotes three focus areas the Iowa 4-H Camping Center an Iowa outreach fund and international 4-H involving IFYE and Campeche Mexico. The Iowa Camping Center funds buy camp gear and counselors while the outreach fund helps state council travel and camperships for needy youths. The IFYE exchange has seen over 160 Iowa youths participate since 1948. A Campeche Mexico work brigade supports youth clubs in rural areas through the AFSC and aids travel grants for Iowa delegates.
Heritage Agency on Aging paralegal workers at Kirkwood Community College will interview senior citizens in Washington and Riverside this winter. They assist with minor legal problems and refer major cases to attorneys for low cost. To schedule, call 1 800 332 5934. walk-ins welcome. Interviews run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 15 and March 31 at the Washington YMCA and February 1 and March 22 at Riverside community hall. The service is free.
Stockholders of the Washington State Bank met Monday evening January 10 and heard that year end assets surpassed 25.5 million dollars with record growth in loans deposits and new accounts. Directors re elected were Merritt E McDaniel Frank L Kos Edmund D Morrison Jr Logan T Heilman John H Miller Milo M Orris and Edward E Jarrard. Jerry D Bryan promoted to assistant vice president Karen Seaton named assistant trust officer. Other officers re elected included McDaniel as chairman Kos as executive committee chair Heilman as president Orris as vice president R Keith Lord cashier and Juanita Hering trust officer.
Washington Chamber of Commerce members met at Winga's Cafe to set dates for the first half of the year and discuss business matters. They planned a January 19 visit by the Jefferson Chamber, reviewed retail hours proposals, and rejected Thursday night store closures. Jim Ellefeon was named chairman of the promotion committee.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors accepted a $5,574 federal antirecession grant as part of a $1.25 billion short term program to aid state and local governments. Funds must be obligated within six months and used only to maintain basic services. no construction.
