Fairfield plant Universal Producing will lay off about half its 220 employees for around two weeks due to weak orders from economic conditions. Remaining staff will work half-days until January 25 when full production is expected to resume.

Over a 36 hour period vandals damaged five empty cars with knives and clubs, signaling that anti American actions have become intimidation. Makaroff reported the confrontation near the Metropole Hotel close to the Kremlin and said the assailants urged him to ask the U.S. government to protect Soviet diplomats in the United States amid ongoing demonstrations.
