Fires devastate Iowa pig farm and home in cold night
Overnight fires in northeast Iowa leveled a pig herd of 6,100 at the Lynn Halverson farm near Waukon and destroyed a Monona couple's home. Mr and Mrs Jim Wilson and their three year old daughter escaped to the brutal 13 below zero. A community drive began to supply clothing for the Wilson family as investigators probe the fires' unknown origin.

Des Moines Children's Zoo director Robert Elgin said a 170 pound chimp named Skipper, who bit two people on Christmas Day, was destroyed Saturday as it could not be safely kept. An Omaha dealer failed to rehome the 12 year old animal, whose body was donated to Iowa State University for education.

Governor urges federal probe into oil hoarding and price hikes

A report by William L. Thomas shows Washington County recovered about $5000 in child support from August to December 1973, up from $1865 in the same period in 1972.
