House Democrats voted to depose Rep. Adam Clayton Powell as chairman of the Education and Labor Committee in a closed caucus. The move followed internal debate and rejected guidance from Speaker John W. McCormack.

An overflow crowd attends the trial of former Senate aide Bobby Baker in Washington. U.S. District Judge Oliver Gasch sequesters jurors to shield proceedings from media coverage. Baker faces nine counts from tax evasion to larceny and fraud in his private businesses. The trial could last up to two and a half months with jurors housed near the Senate.

Two bachelor brothers George Lucker aged 48 from Anthon and Norman aged 35 from Sioux City were found dead in a stalled car on a Woodbury County road near their father's farm. Medical examiner Dr. Thomas Corden ruled carbon monoxide poisoning from prolonged heater use in near blizzard conditions after the car ran out of gas. they were last seen Friday night and discovered Saturday night by neighbors.
Tonight the lows in Iowa fall toward zero in the northeast and near 10 in the southwest. Tuesday turns colder with highs around 20 in the northeast and 30 in the southwest. Wednesday looks fair with little change in temperatures.
Two Des Moines attorneys say they were fired by Attorney General Richard Turner as special counsels in price fixing suits against 22 asphalt firms. Lex Hawkins and Vern Sawyer handed in case files and sought a hearing with Turner, who would not comment. They allege politics influenced the dismissal and plan to seek release before U.S. District Judge William C. Hanson. The matter may be reviewed by the Iowa Executive Council to determine who prosecutes the cases, with potential years of litigation and millions in damages.
Des Moines UPI reports the Iowa Legislature begins its 62nd regular session with swearing in of 124 House members and 32 Senate members. Governors Hughes and Fulton, both Democrats, are re-elected unofficially, inaugural ceremonies set for Thursday, and issues include tax revision, government reorganization, apportionment, civil service, and a projected $80 million general fund surplus. Republicans hold an 89-35 House majority. Democrats hold 29 Senate seats with 229 margin noted locally.
Gordon Slim Chalmers asked to be replaced as athletic director at Iowa State University and to remain only as head of physical education after July 1. President Parks will urge separation of duties and a three year term as chairman of Physical Education, with a nationwide search for a new director to be undertaken.
Communist frogmen mined and sank the Jamaica Bay dredge on the Mekong River, killing two Americans and wounding a fourth, with a missing crewman. Viet Cong also attacked two Vietnamese minesweepers and a British tanker in Saigon River, amid broader Mekong Delta fighting and war developments.
