River side resident William Roberts was brought before Justice Rogers for running a gambling house. His $300 bond was set to appear next week in district court. inability to post bond led to jail time. Roberts pleaded not guilty and waived examination, bound over to the grand jury.
The Weather column reports Hite as the leading horse buyer in Washington with higher prices. Two Chicago brokers from Home Emporium arrived to buy horses but found Hite purchasing more and paid 200 for a pair, leaving dissatisfied after the sale and departure.
In a regular session on Thursday evening the Modern Woodmen Lodge installed this year’s officers including Geo W Howe clerk, J G Moriarty banker, W P Moothart sentry and Wm Ross delegate to the Dubuque encampment in April. The lodge has 45 members with seven new members admitted this year.
In Washington County a farmer bought a coffin for his child who died of measles. He paid ten dollars then more, and a neighbor questioned pauper status. The undertaker later repaid the county the amount received, after realizing the billing confusion.

The County Board adjourned last evening until Tuesday next, suspending business and resuming its session on that date.
At her Southeast Washington home this morning Mrs Jas Miller fell while stepping on a walk and sprained her wrist badly implying a minor domestic accident with a clear injury.
The annual meeting of the stock holders will be held in Smouse's Hall on January 11th.

Win Smouse elected secretary. resolutions denounce liquor and call for repeal of the mulct law. A permanent committee and a county league are planned.
The Hunt Company presented the comedy Mixed Pickles to a large audience and closes its week with A Man In Black. They will perform in Mt Pleasant next week at the Essley House run by Mr and Mrs J I Billick. O Hr Ward, longtime hat and cap salesman, lies ill at Birdsall Hotel in Oskaloosa. The Fremont Gazette reports the Gardner Mills wedding as a surprise to many with the bride noted as accomplished and the groom a sensible choice. The couple, relatives in Lexington Washington county Iowa, plan to move to their new home after visiting kin.
