The Ottumwa district Ministerial association approved the Herbert Hoover commission plan to aid small European nations defeated by Germany. They noted the commission's safeguards to prevent abuse of the program.
Monroe County Attorney John Miller states no charges will be filed against Tom Haynes and Glen Keller in the Albia police death during an arrest. The pair will serve jail terms for intoxication.
Davenport ministers pledge support to State Senator John Berg's bill mandating pre marital physical examinations. Davenport, a destination city for out of state couples, already tied to health test laws in other states.
Major construction operations at the Du Pont cellophane plant in Clinton are finished. Machinery is being installed as operating officials arrive. The company will send 16 Clinton men who worked on the plant to Buffalo New York Richmond Virginia and Old Hickory Tennessee for training courses.
Newton resident Sam Linderholm a traveling salesman for a wholesale grocery firm was not hurt in the crash itself but injured when he slipped on ice returning to his car. He broke both bones in his left arm when the vehicle skidded off the highway south of town.
Atlantic report shows Max McCluskey 26 charged with driving while intoxicated after a New Year’s noon dinner invitation to Highway Patrolman Charles Woods. Woods, patrolling near Atlantic, observed a swerving car and arrested McCluskey. Woods spent New Year’s dinner at an Atlantic hotel while McCluskey remained in custody.
A 20-year-old Missouri migrant mother, Mrs. Virgil Richards, perished from severe burns after using kerosene to start a fire in a Burlington rooming house. Her selfless actions saved her two babies as flames engulfed the rooming house. she died several hours later.
Davenport ministers pass a resolution to oppose a seven day week at Rock Island arsenal citing Sabbath infringement. The Rev Louis G Krebs seeks a conference with Brig Gen Norman Ramsey to discuss preserving the Sabbath amid a national emergency.
Des Moines reports that Iowa will propose consolidating 4873 school districts into county units next legislative session. The plan, backed by teachers and county council with Iowa Taxpayers association support, would cut rural education costs by 20 to 40 percent and would be optional by county vote.
The Albert M Huff camp Spanish American War Veterans held a noon election after a dinner at North Side cafe. Allen Kline of Vinton Iowa vice president of the Iowa Farm Bureau will address the Washington County Farm Bureau Thursday afternoon January 9 at the United Presbyterian church Washington. The meeting starts 10 30 a m with reports and election results to follow and Kline is expected to speak around 2 30 p m. Attendees are asked to bring baskets and table service with coffee provided.
L F Sigafoose, the county's sole Civil War veteran, celebrated his 97th birthday today with a noon dinner at the W H Sigafoose home south of town. Relatives and friends from Washington and Fairfield joined the family, with three cakes and birthday cards from Women’s Relief corps groups. He later planned to attend an honor supper hosted by Mrs. Sam Marsh.
Donald Schwab, a 22 year old parolee who pleaded guilty to a 1936 forgery in this county, asked sheriff Putnam to be jailed after violating parole by overstaying a visit. He showed little cooperation, saying he preferred Anaosma prison to Cedar Rapids, and the parole board plans to decide whether to return him to Anamosa.

The Columbus Junction community sale set a record with 126 horses consigned, the largest sale in Smylie sale barn history. Buyers from several states attended as selling began at 11 30 and ended by 5. Top mares brought 300 dollars and roan geldings 222 59, with average prices for mares and geldings between 65 and 1090 dollars.
