Alfred Hammill of Appanoose county announces a $50 reward for information leading to the capture of thieves who stole three hogs he had cut and stored for winter. The incident involves a Centerville area farm and underscores local concerns over livestock theft.
Des Moines report states the Friday citizens conference on education will center on state public school support. Miss Agnes Samuelson, state superintendent, announced the program with morning and afternoon sessions and W. S. Rupe of Ames scheduled to speak at luncheon.
Prof. T. R. Thoren announced a new flying club open to faculty and students at the University of Iowa College of Engineering. The club will compete in flying technique and bomb dropping using flour sacks, dead stick landings, balloon bursting, and hangar flying as part of the National Intercollegiate Fly Time club.

Mrs Henry Frankel of Des Moines resigns from the Iowa State Conservation Commission ending a century of official service to conservation work. She intends to continue conservation efforts from outside the commission though the timing of her departure remains unclear.
John Hipsley 40 former New Market city clerk was jailed on a theft charge but freed on a $500 bond. County attorney Roger Warin said Hipsley found a wallet containing $25 belonging to Bruce Jared of Bedford and did not report it to authorities.
Des Moines Gov. Clyvde Herring said he would deliver a farewell message to the Iowa Legislature next Tuesday before leaving for Washington on Friday to become one of the state's two United States senators. Inauguration of Gov elect Nels G. Kraschel is planned for Thursday January 14.
Mrs. Alice B Smouse aged 55 of Vinton died suddenly of heart disease. Vinton postmistress for three years she was active in the American Legion auxiliary and a member of the Methodist Church and the Rebekah lodge.
A Cedar Falls High student admitted to police the gang tale she told Mason Brown of a Des Moines vaudeville troupe was a hoax. She said the actor resembled a gangster friend of her brother, whom he had double crossed in a "big deal." She then claimed to her father and Chief Schwanke that she loved the performer and was glad to meet him.
Dorothy Sexton, 11, died hours after an icy fall at Rockwell City school during recess. She slipped from a gate while swinging and sustained a fatal cerebral hemorrhage.
District Judge 0 S Franklin overruled Rieka Findley plea for new trial in the estate suit of Park A Findley. The court ruled Mise Findley must turn over about $142,500 in personal property to the executor, contending the brother gave it before his death in June 1935.
Des Moines Iowa delegates set to organize with 54 Republicans and 54 Democrats facing nine contests in a tight caucus drive for speaker posts. Republican and Democratic caucuses plan Saturday and Sunday with battle over president pro tempore and key clerks amid Kraschel and Herring transition questions.
The cold wave materialized as the thermometer fell 29 degrees from yesterday afternoon to last night. Yesterday reached 40 degrees and the low was reached last night. Forecasters expect possible snow tonight or tomorrow, though none arrived yet.

Amos Stout Jr escaped a three mile northwest Brighton farm home fire about 3 AM partly clad by leaping from a bedroom window. The house and contents burned, the blaze likely started in the upper part from a defective chimney. insurance may partly cover the loss.
The Mutual truck was summoned to the Sam Marsh home south of town this morning about eleven o'clock where a chimney was burning out. Mrs. Marsh, alone in the house, secured the fire fighting apparatus as a precaution.
The Y W C A board will hold its annual meeting and elect six board members next Monday evening at 7 o'clock. Balloting may occur from 6 to 7 o'clock with names posted for voters to see. This marks the first board meeting of the year.

Jesse Busby becomes sole owner of the Widmer and Busby clothing store on the square after purchasing the Widmer estate share. The Widmer Busby name will be retained and no policy or personnel changes are planned. The store has grown under Busby’s management since Widmer’s death. In Des Moines three people died in icy Iowa crashes raising seven day toll to nine. Ernest Martin 14 Blairsburg John Toeller 62 Cedar Rapids G M Porttert Bloomfield identified as victims.

In Spain near Madrid a major clash between loyalist troops and rebel forces intensified as German Italian Moors and Foreign Legion units fought nine miles northwest of Madrid. Gen. Des Moines reports James McDonnell of Independence in Buchanan county was named a state estate agent by W. W. Akers, head of the bureau of investigation. The announcement follows four other new state agent appointments and also names Irma Weeman as superintendent of the identification division.
Police say Kerchill admitted hitting something after a downtown street accident involving Mr and Mrs Toeller. In a separate incident Pottorff tried to restart a stalled coal truck, which backed into a barn and crushed him.
