Democrats Pick Miller for Speaker

George E. Miller of Harlan was nominated by a Democratic caucus in Des Moines as speaker of the Iowa House. He won 39 to 37 on the second ballot over Carl B. Stiger after C. J. Ditto withdrew. P. H. Donlon was elected speaker pro tem by 44 to 32, with Lloyd Fils named chief clerk.

Mrs Gardner of Wellman Dead at 87 in Washington County

Mrs J N Gardner 87 longtime Wellman resident died yesterday after a brief illness. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2 pm at Wellman Methodist Church with Rev T C Kennedy presiding. Burial in Wellman cemetery. She was born November 27 1845 in Franklin County Ohio and married J N Gardner December 20 1870. She leaves three sons Jesse Wellman J Gardner Sioux Falls SD and Fred Yankton SD three grandchildren and brothers John Stump Ed and Hiram plus several sisters and a brother predeceased.

Wellman Woman Hurt In Basement Wood Incident

Mrs Phillip Schwimley was struck in the head by a flying wood chunk while placing wood in the cellar. A one inch gash required two stitches and she is reportedly stable. Also noted, Mrs Frank Schwartz is seriously ill at home with daughter Mrs Max McCrabb away in Clinton.

Demons Down Mt Pleasant on Iowa Wesleyan Court

Washington high school’s Demons clinched sole first in the Little Six with a 41-23 victory over Mt Pleasant on the Iowa Wesleyan court. Coach Guy Carlton’s team shows class with three straight wins and heads toward Ottumwa next Friday. Wells and McClure led the Demons while Bentzinger topped Mt Pleasant.

Concert at County Home Feature Local Instrumentalists

The county home audience enjoyed an hour long evening program of instrumental music by Milan Shields R L Grimes Bruce Good Alice Hunter Mary Hunter and Helen Coffey. The group performed familiar pieces that pleased those in attendance.

Washington Little Symphony Impresses at High School Concert

The Washington High School auditorium hosted the Washington Little Symphony Orchestra led by Milburn A. McKay for a pleasing concert. The forty five piece ensemble featured Duane Peterson on piano and Helen Melincki and William Stewart as soloists, with selections from Schubert Grieg and Bach plus the radio favorite Two Guitars.

Latchem Named to Fill Vacancy on County Hospital Board

Mrs Stella Wells Latchem was appointed by the Washington county board of supervisors to fill the vacancy on the county hospital board caused by her father W P Wells death. She will serve two years until the next election. Wells had been reelected last November.

Eckels Funeral Services Set for Sunday

William T. Eckels dies early yesterday and funeral services are planned for Sunday at 2 30 PM. The L A Jones funeral home will host the service with Dr F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove cemetery.

Insurance In Force Is Cut Half Million

The Washington County Farmers' Mutual Insurance association reported a drop in total insurance at risk for the first time in its history but ended the year in strong condition as it begins its 51st year. Net decrease since last year was 572,796 though total at risk remained above 20 million. Amount paid to policy holders rose to 52,113.70 from 22,825.19, with 219 claims settled in 1932. The treasurer's report showed a balance of 30,725.20 as of year end and directors were elected at a late afternoon meeting at City Hall.

Iowa Nine High Schools Meet Declama tion Finals in Davenport

The Iowa Nine Boys contest finals in Davenport drew about 800 fans. Fairfield won first in humorous and second in oratorical and dramatic. Iowa City took first in dramatic and second in humorous. Davenport won oratorical, Ottumwa tied Washington for third in humorous, with Washington placing third overall. Other schools listed: Burlington Muscatine Grinnell Clinton not participating. Girls’ declamatory contest set for Muscatine in February.
