President Roosevelt sent a 1937 budget plan to Congress forecasting a balanced regular federal budget with a work relief deficit of one to three million dollars. Word reached here of the death Sunday afternoon in Iola Kansas of J D Buchanan for about twenty years an employee of the American Pearl Button company He had been a shelter for the American Pearl and had recently operated a blank cotton cutting plant at Iola He survived by his widow and two daughters and had served in an engineers unit in France and was active in the American Legion and the Masonic lodge in Washington.

Sheriff Harold M Puotnam reported two youths Joe Mulvaney and Glenn Anderson confessed to stealing cars and vandalizing property in multiple towns. They recovered items from Crawfordsville Illinois West Washington street and the Schenefelt garage, and admitted taking a Mace Motor Co car from the ILW Schenefelt yard. They were arrested in Iowa City and ditched a car south of Iowa City. They face arraignment in Mt. Pleasant district court.
Washington public schools reopen this morning after a two week Christmas vacation. Most pupils and teachers are ready to resume work, with only a few absences due to pupil fitness. The first semester nears completion and the second half of the school year will begin later this month.

Sheriff H. M. Putnam reports James J. Kellog once under suspicion of a confidence game has been sentenced to one to ten years in Juliet state prison. Kellog and partner James McDonald were arrested here October 9 1981 for various offenses including unlawful license plates. This marks Kellog’s first confirmed conviction after prior arrests.
Two men from Dubuque J M Jackson and Joe Coryell pleaded guilty to stealing women s stockings from Montgomery Ward and were jailed for thirty days by Justice J B Bovee after a county arrest by Sheriff H B Putnam. They had gloves and two suits in the car from other stores, and their descriptions and stolen items will be shared with other counties. Both are 37 and claim Dubuque families. one has a Montana license and a Wisconsin ID.
