Other items note Porto Rico tariff petitions, U S troop movements toward Manila, Spanish priests fleeing to the Americas, segregated railroad coaches in North Carolina, and Lord Curzon’s formal assumption of viceroy duties in India.
Lansing January reports Governor Pingree delivering a long message to the legislature urging equal taxation for railroads under general laws, repealing special charters, supports income tax above $1000, criticizes federal lobbyists, condemns trusts, opposes expansion, and favors public rail ownership.
Thomas P. Kerwin, a juror in a damage suit against West Chicago Street Railway, accused Bailiff John Dwyer of Judge Hutchinson's court of offering a bribe for a pro railway vote. Kerwin reported the bribe to State's Attorney Deneen. action expected. The jury had given a verdict for the railway after an initial 9 to 3 ballot.
Four people injured as Libertyville secont passenger train bound south hits a northbound freight engine in Rondout Illinois. Freight fireman Edward Derkin and engineer Samuel Cochrane of Milwaukee sustained serious and minor injuries. a Chicago newsboy Babcock and a mail clerk were also hurt. Passenger crew escaped unharmed. both locomotives demolished. crash occurred on main track at coal chute.

Peoria Illinois officials report the new city hall appears practically finished with an estimated cost of 150000, but the building committee chair warns the total may reach 175000 or more. The original appropriation began at 100000 and rose to 115000 and then 125000.

Washington January 6 The judiciary committee moved through bills and examined a measure codifying Alaska laws. A section penalizing force or intimidation against workers was debated as an attack on organized labor and was finally struck out amid partisan arguments.
Joliet Illinois January 6 At the Swinbank residence Mrs William Swinbank shot her brother Richard Ramsey in the shoulder as a quarrel dating seven years culminated Ramsey who is 48 had lived with his sister and drank heavily Ramsey claimed he was reading when she entered and threatened him he survived without serious injury the case may not go to court

Madrid reports continue to charge Americans with atrocities in the Philippines. It cites claims of a Spanish naval lieutenant handed to insurgents and subjected to tortures, and says 104 monks were imprisoned at Cagayan with many dying from hunger and suffering.
The township directors of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association were entertained yesterday at noon by Sidney Coon, secretary of the Association, at the Lafayette house. A special dinner was prepared for eighteen, and all attendees enjoyed the meal and social features.
