A serious train collision near Jefferson City on the Missouri Pacific line today costs lives. Emergency crews responded to the crash site as investigators began assessing the cause and extent of casualties.
A Missouri Pacific passenger train derailed one mile west of Jefferson City at 3:30 this morning. Engineer Charles Clawson of Sedalia and Fireman Scott of St. Louis were killed when the engine struck a boulder and rolled into the Missouri River. The other cars remained on the track, and no other passengers or crew were seriously injured.
News from Manila Jan 4 reports Iloilo rebels ratified a pledge to land unarmed but threaten resistance if armed. Reinforcements arrive from Negros as U S ships Baltimore and Arizona try to deter the scale of opposition. Spanish officer tied to the unrest is blamed, while American troops under General Miller drill openly on the beach near Iloilo.

Joseph Smith, sought in Woodford County Illinois for murder, was captured at his residence on Rhode Island street in Indianapolis. He allegedly stabbed rival horseman King after a dispute over three months, later developing blood poisoning from wounds that caused King’s death.
