Khrushchev Urges Peace Pact to Ban Force in Disputes

Premier Khrushchev asks world leaders to back a four point agreement banning force in territorial disputes. Moscow Radio aired a Dec 31 letter arguing such a pact would ease disarmament efforts and reduce militarism, urging major powers to set an example.

Big Wheat Shipment Approved for Soviet Trade

The Agriculture Department said it sold 12.9 million bushels of No 2 hard amber durum wheat for 2.50 a bushel FOB East Coast to a private trader, likely Continental Grain Corp, for delivery to the Soviet bloc under an export subsidy bid of 72 to 73 cents per bushel totaling 9.3 million. The sale saves storage costs and may reflect government help with shipping costs, a longtime barrier to US Soviet wheat deals.

Kiwanis club installed 1964 officers at a noon Captains Table meeting. Ed Vosika became president, Wendell Eden vice president, William Smart treasurer, Eldon Brake secretary. Lt. Gov. Robert Koch presided. New directors named include Paul Gebhart, T. M Nelson, Robert Bates, Rex Ray, Harry Levy, and Walter Farrell. Past President Lee Holland Rene Grecian Harold Mangold Bill Smart received a membership award. Rev Dr Robert Robinson of Marengo attended.

Goldwater to Seek 1964 GOP Nomination for President

Arizona senator Barry Goldwater announced he will seek the Republican nomination for president in 1964 while also filing for re-election to his U S Senate seat. He spoke to reporters after a private meeting with 30 state political figures, and Knowland endorsed him early. Goldwater, 55, rose to prominence after defeating Ernest McFarland in 1952 and is seen as conservatism's leading national voice in opposition to the Democrats.

Anderson Named Chairman Of Washington County Supervisors

Howard Anderson of Crawfordsville was named chairman of the Washington County Board of Supervisors for 1964. The board, meeting to close 1963 affairs, also reappointed Clarence Logan and Mrs Earl Redlinger to the welfare board. Homer Vincent of Wellman was named to a five year term on the county conservation board.

Taylors Lead Bridge Marathon After Fifth Round

Dr and Mrs Roland Taylor hold a narrow lead in the Y's Men’s bridge marathon with 10 530 points at the end of round five. In second are Mr and Mrs Gilbert Mills with 10 390 and Ruth Simpson with Helen Owen at 9 860, followed by a list of top ten finishers including Charles Morris Falk Hillman Dean Anderson Eden and Campbell couples.

Weather Outlook for Iowa Says Fair Weekend

United Press International reports fair conditions in Iowa tonight and Saturday with colder temperatures. Expect highs in the 30s north to 40s south and lows in the 20s. A slight warming Sunday then cooler again by midweek. Five day forecast suggests near normal averages with little or no precipitation.

Benefit auction seeks more items for Jaycees sale

Items for the Washington Jaycees benefit auction on January 18 at the county fairgrounds are sought. Local merchants have cooperated. auctioneers Murphy and Soukup donate time. proceeds support the Proctor family and junior Chamber of Commerce members handle the setup.
