Rubio shower for fire victims aids Cox family
The John Cox family of Rubio who lost their farm home and most belongings in a recent fire will be honored at a community shower Monday January 6 at 7 30 pm in the Rubio community building. Gifts of food clothing and furniture will be collected Sunday and Monday for delivery at the shower. Mr Cox sustained burns and a deep knee laceration rescuing a child but the family is improving. Barbara Gingerich 64 of Kalona died January 1 in Iowa City after a brief illness, funeral January 4 at East Union Mennonite Church Kalona with burial at Gingerich Cemetery. Burial and arrangements are handled by Yoder Funeral Home. Barbara was born October 17 1896 in Washington county daughter of Jeptha D and Barbara Finan Gingerich and taught at Grace Childrens Home in Henderson Nebraska before illness. Survived by brother Rufus Kalona sisters Mrs Lewis Yoder Kalona and Mrs James Howard Baltimore Md and several nieces and nephews.

Fear U S plane down in Ocean
A U S Air Force C124 Globemaster missing over the Pacific with nine aboard was sighted about 800 miles west northwest of Honolulu. It later remained unclear if the plane was airborne or in the water. The craft had dumped cargo to gain fuel, delaying a landfall at Midway Island or French Frigate Shoals.

Real Mc Coy, grand champion steer of the 1963 International Live stock Exposition, will be exhibited in New London January 3 and 4 at the New London State Bank. The steer, bought by Central National Bank of Chicago for 10 per pound, was acquired to display to Chicago bank customers and the bank's midwestern clientele.

No Formal Move For Extension On Berlin Christmas Pass
Berlin officials say there are no formal moves by either side to extend the temporary Christmas pass that ends Sunday. West Berliners may be blocked from East Berlin after midnight unless last minute talks occur. A West Berlin youth committed suicide after crossing back to the Western sector. Police also report a 2 year old refugee swam across the Werra River to West Germany. Mayor Brandt signals willingness to restart talks to keep the wall open for visitors.

Iowa's 1963 industrial output tops nine billion
Iowa's combined industrial and agricultural production reached a preliminary record of more than 9.5 billion in 1963, led by a peak industrial output of 7.008 billion. Farm values slipped 1.7 percent to about 2.567 billion, while manufacturing added value rose to 2.33 billion and employment in manufacturing grew to roughly 179,000. The Development Commission credits postwar manufacturing growth with economic stability and about 18,000 new job opportunities from industry expansion.

Three Die in Fire at Aged Home in Columbia
In Columbia Mississippi a nursing home for elderly men burned early today trapping and killing three residents. Authorities found three bodies in the charred remains of a one story frame building housing 17 or 18 men. Survivors escaped or fled into freezing air as firefighters rescued others. The resident recalled the building dated to 1840.

Milan Ill. man killed in auto crash at 37
Everett Prebyl 37 of Milan Illinois died after an auto crash on 2nd Avenue and 17th Street. His wife survived with minor injuries. Funeral is Saturday at Larson Funeral Home Milan. Surviving relatives include several aunts in Washington County and children Raymond Victor and Steven. The report also notes a 1963 gifts and grants total of over 11 million accepted by the state board of regents for the University of Town.

Castro says Cuba won't renounce Marxism for normalized ties
Fidel Castro in a New Year telephone interview with ABC outlined Cuba's stance on US relations. He said normal relations are possible but Marxism cannot be renounced, and he noted Kennedy understood the situation while Johnson’s policy remains uncertain. He touched on demotion of American properties nationalized in 1959 and predicted eventual normalization under past and potential U.S. leaders.
