The Pearl Harbor committee heard that President Roosevelt said in 1944 he was surprised by the 1941 attack. Admiral Stark testified there was no advance warning among Washington officials of Japan's plan and that Roosevelt believed Pearl Harbor defenses were alert. Stark recalled Roosevelt's remark as late as summer 1944 and noted Roosevelt died in 1945. He also discussed Admiral Kimmel's awareness of possible air attack and Hawaiian defenses.

Funeral Services For John McGugin
Funeral services were held yesterday at L. A. Jones funeral home for John McGugin conducted by Rev. T. E. White. Pallbearers were Glenn Smith Jesse James Hal Williams Don Marwell Vernon Witting Theodore Bailey. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery. His brother Robert M. McGuvin of Chicago attended and returned home last night. No new details on his death, found in a wooded area near St. Louis, likely due to exposure. The family had learned of him recently in Illinois towns after leaving Chicago weeks ago.

Car at Wellman Not One Used by Bandits
Sheriff H M Putnam said the abandoned car found in Wellman was not the vehicle sought in North Carolina where bandits used a stolen car. The Wellman car was same make as the southern stolen car but not the one believed to be involved. It had stood on a Wellman street for weeks.

Leo Sturgeon began work in Washington county yesterday as county extension director. He is employed by the Washington Farm Bureau and the Iowa extension service. Sturgeon has been a 4H Club agent in Os suth and Sas counties and earlier directed Butler County extension work before military service in 1942. He completed 25 flying missions in the European theater. A Dallas County native and Iowa State College graduate, he is married with no children. He succeeds S. A Ossian who resigned to become sales manager for New Method Equipment in Indianapolis.
