John Butler announces the community theater group has selected the Sound of Music for the season. Tryouts set for January 27 and 28 with details forthcoming. Play books available at the library for interested performers. The musical features several choral roles for women and speaking parts and is slated for the week of April 12.
Vandals shattered glass in nearly all windows and the door of Leo Stone's popcorn stand on the Schoonover Drug Store building north side. Police investigate after the incident in the night Monday. Stone offers a reward for arrests and conviction. A second note reports 4 inches of snow in the Washington area with street crews clearing roads. Frank Lukavsky, street commissioner, asks residents to move vehicles to assist removal starting around midnight.
Snow today and tonight may alter plans for several districts. Washington Mid-Prairie and Highland students could return Thursday morning while Waco district and St James parochial school in Washington stay off until Monday January. About two inches lay on the ground by noon after early snow while temperatures rose from year end lows.
The Washington Upumust Club teams with Scout troop 242 for a community paper drive on Saturday January 5 in Washington seeking newspapers only. Donors may leave papers on porches or curbs or deliver to 926 South Second Avenue, with contact options Wilbert Graber or Rex Ray for pickup.
Two conflagrations in central Iowa caused extensive damage. The Snedecor Grain Elevator at Rhodes burned, gutting the facility and two annexes, with 75 000 to 80 000 bushels of corn and soybeans lost. The Town House restaurant in Scranton burned, destroying the venue. Fire departments from seven communities fought both fires for over three hours and an hour and a half respectively.

Temperatures not as cold today with highs 10 to 15, tonight around 5 above. Thursday highs near 10 to 15, lows tonight around 5 above. Winds 10 mph or less today, shifting northeast 10 to 15 mph tonight. Measurable snow probability 80 percent this afternoon, 40 percent tonight, 20 percent Thursday.
The old council winds up 1973 business in brief ceremonies at City Hall. Harold Johnson, age 65, is sworn in as mayor along with new councilmen Don Hansen Richard Anderson and Raymond J Miller and mayor pro tem John Walker. The six man council also includes Robert Nicola and Clarence Brown. Several 1974 appointments fill city posts. The retiring officials praise service before turnover. The session lasts about a half hour and the new council plans its first regular meeting Monday at 7 30 p m.
State and local authorities probe the deaths of Mark Allen Murrill 16 of Audubon and John Castle 21 of Shenandoah in western Iowa. Murrill was found partially frozen near his Audubon home and died after admission to Audubon County Memorial Hospital. Castle’s body was found Tuesday in a deserted Shenandoah building with a broken window and blood on the floor. foul play not yet determined.
President Nixon signed a bill requiring all states to reduce maximum highway speed to 55 mph within 60 days to save fuel and avoid loss of federal highway funds. The move accompanies a plan to revive financially weak railroads and extend emergency locator transmitter deadlines. Goldwater voiced GOP concerns about Watergate’s effect on elections.
A major winter storm bears down on Iowa forecasting 2 to 4 inches in southern and eastern areas with 1 to 3 inches in the north. The National Weather Service issued a travelers advisory statewide as subzero readings lingered. Winds will drive and create blowing snow with reduced visibility before arctic air returns by Thursday night.
Gold jumped to 115.50 dollars an ounce on the London bullion market as new year trading began, marking a five month high after a pre Christmas rise, with European money markets opening slowly. The pound slid to 2.3115 dollars, while Frankfurt opened at 2.71 marks as dealers reported hectic trading and a higher dollar.
United Press International reports the first winter storm of the year drove temps to 45 below zero and dumped up to 16 inches of snow across a wide Midlands region, with heavy snow warnings from Utah to northern Texas and into Kansas Oklahoma. Snow and wind hit the Rockies and Great Plains while extreme cold paralyzed travel from Minnesota to Missouri and Kansas.
A 22 inch gas line explosion in southwestern Illinois interrupted heating for about 7000 people in nearby towns. It started a fire that destroyed two small buildings. Repairs were set for late today and crews planned to relight pilots in homes with gas furnaces and ranges.
Dozens of passengers on three Amtrak trains were rescued as engines replaced failed units in near zero weather. More than 900 originally aboard stayed in or left the trains, with many taking buses or shelter. Incidents occurred at Galesburg Illinois Klamath Falls Oregon and Jefferson City Missouri.
Clerk of Court Robert Riley reports 1973 births fell to 257 from 263 in 1972, with 181 deaths versus 209 in 1972, and marriages down to 161 from 177 in 1972. Divorces rose to 46 in 1973, up from 38 in 1972, reflecting a four year trend.
