Bloomfield council selects Donald W. Harris as city attorney for 1941 as Paul Proctor shifts to county attorney after election in November. Harris is a retiring Davis County attorney pick. decision follows January changes.
Mason City’s last surviving Civil War veteran Rhockley Whipple marked his 101st New Year’s Day birthday describing himself as feeling extra fine. An open house for Whipple’s friend followed at a home in the east part of the city where a birthday cake with 101 candles was cut.
Cedar Rapids reports its first 1941 births as twin daughters to Mr and Mrs Louis Vosmek. The Vosmeks already have four children. One girl weighed 6 pounds and the other 6 pounds 12 ounces.
Bloomfield passes a nuisance ordinance targeting house to house canvassers peddlers and vendors of merchandise or services. Penalties include up to 30 days in jail or fines up to 100 dollars.
Mrs Willis E Grant of Newton lost a new fur coat from a Christmas gift in a closet fire at her mother Mrs Arthur A Jones home. Mr and Mrs Grant occupied the room when the blaze occurred and saved only the clothes they wore.
Coroner Sid ney Smith of Black Hawk county reported the bullet that killed Darrel Wilson a Waterloo youth in a hunting accident near Cedar Falls was deflected by a rock before striking him. Earlier reports suggested Darrell was in line with his brother Robert Wilson who fired at what was believed to be a rabbit.
John King, 20, was seriously injured at his home when a brass tube used for holding match heads exploded. The blast occurred after the tube was struck with a hammer, propelling the tube into King’s abdomen.
Dr. D. W. Morehouse of Drake University in Des Moines is seriously ill at home after a period of improvement. He is 64 and suffered pneumonia followed by a heart ailment. Oxygen is administered daily. Ed C. Lytton, son in law and university business manager, is a patient at Iowa Methodist Hospital and expected to leave for home soon.
Iowa records its first 1941 wedding at 3 a.m. Wednesday in an Indianola oil station. Bride Ann Regina O'Donnell 24 a store clerk and groom Richard C. Knowlton 24 a CCC chief clerk in Des Moines were married by Justice of the Peace Nelson Burns beside the station counter.
In Flint Michigan the United Automobile Workers CIO calls a three day strike vote at Chevrolet plants to protest alleged contract violations. The measure could halt production of army truck motors and affect about 12 000 workers. CIO regional director Carl Swanson cites months of grievances and the dismissal of a shop committee member as key incidents. Plant No 9 issues cited. plant manager Harold F Howard declines comment.
Des Moines reports Iowa traffic fatalities for 1940 total 530, matching 1939 but likely to rise with year-end totals. Fog and rain during New Year’s holiday contributed to seven highway deaths as the nation sees higher accident rates.
A program and reception honored United Presbyterian’s new pastor Rev. George Kerr after the New Year’s Day congregational dinner. About 200 attended the cooperative noon meal. kitchen and dining room committees were led by Mrs D J Ross and Mrs Raymond Anderson. Richard Stewart presided. Carolyn Hamilton led group singing. Richard McCleery welcomed the Kerrs on behalf of the congregation, Dr R C Keagy spoke for the ministerial association, and Rev and Mrs Kerr responded. The event closed with God Bless America and a reception in the young people’s room until 2 39 p m for guests to meet the couple.

Martha R Vincent known as Mrs Charles Corette died at 11 15 this morning at 708 South Iowa avenue after long illness dating from Christmas. Funeral at United Presbyterian church Saturday at 2 00 conducted by Rev George Kerr with Shermans funeral home handling arrangements. Surviving are husband Charles and two daughters Nora McMillen of St Paul and Margaret Owen of Monmouth. She belonged to United Presbyterian church and the Journal’s Three Quarter Century club. Her life was spent in the community and she attributed longevity to doing good.
William Allen White resigns as chairman of the committee to defend America by aiding the Allies in Emporia Kansas. The resignation takes effect once a successor is named.
The House ended sine die at 1 30 PM after passing a resolution praising Speaker Rayburn for his service. The Senate will meet tomorrow an hour before the 77th Congress convenes, ending the 76th session automatically when the 77th is gavelled to order.
Police arrested ten men and several workers were slightly injured in a clash between strike pickets and about 75 workers seeking to return to work at the Rufus Wilson hosiery mill in Burlington North Carolina.
Fred Bauer, veteran Washington county supervisor, was chosen chair of the board at the first meeting of the year. Routine session covered standard matters with no changes in board membership or oversight territories for bridge and road work. Deputies in county offices and bonds were approved as required by law.

Harold Joseph Beman 18 months died after an illness and was buried Friday at Garrett Cemetery after services at the Delta Methodist church. Born June 6, 1939 at Blakesburg, he moved with his parents to Washington when his father joined Harwood shoe store. Survived by parents Harold and Winona, two sisters Betty Lou and Ida Mae, maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Charles Spicer of Ollie, and grandfather G A Beman of Delta. Funeral arrangements are by Reynolds funeral home of Sigourney.
