An Iowa extension official notes a shortage of long needles halting cotton mattress construction for low income rural families. About 6 500 large needles are needed to convert surplus cotton into mattresses while imports from England are delayed after a ship carrying them sank.
The 1,545 marriages in 1940 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua marked a yearly record. Most months rose over 1939 figures. Rev. William Kent, who died in August, performed 200 before retiring March 19. His successor, Rev. F. Hanscom, has 1,280 since then, with 65 during his vacation.
In Cedar Falls area, 20 year old Robert C Wilson shot at a moving object on a hill with a .22 rifle and fatally hit his 18 year old brother Darrell M Wilson who was hunting with him on a farm three miles west of Cedar Falls. Witnesses say the object was a man shaped moving silhouette. The Wilson family of Waterloo reported the tragedy to authorities.
Dr Karl Friedrich Meyer director of the Hooper Institute for Medical Research at the University of California visited Des Moines to talk with the state board of health doctors about the recent Iowa infantile paralysis epidemic The germ is a microserpically invisible virus transmission unknown with sewage linked findings and the virus may spread before symptoms appear similar to measles He noted one person can spread it to another and suggested early transmissibility before illness.
Des Moines Iowa attorneys will attend a three day tax report school in the statehouse house chamber. More than 400 lawyers are expected to participate Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday as the Iowa State Bar Association sponsors the event to help attorneys meet rising tax reporting demands.
Chicago report says John Junior, son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Stork, born at Mercy Hospital via Caesarian delivery at 12 01 a m to start the year. In Minneapolis, twins Rudolph and Mrs Reich welcome two sons born at 11 58 p m and 12 05 a m, respectively, marking the new year.
In 1940 Washington county jail held 72 inmates the smallest total since 1936. Sheriff H M Putnam compiled the yearly figures noting 1940 had no jail empties with a peak of nine prisoners at one time. Costs for board and lodging totaled 1383 10 dollars with meals served 5227 for the year.
Five more pew automobiles were registered at the county treasurer’s office yesterday to close 1940 and bring December’s total to 73. This shortens the year’s new car total by thirteen from December 1939 when 86 were licensed at the courthouse. County Treasurer Marion.
Glen Randolph 43 of Muscatine spent the first three days of the new year in Washington county jail after being found on a Milwaukee freight train wagon, intoxicated and unable to stay aboard. He told a confused tale of boarding in Davenport en route home, pleaded guilty to intoxication and received a three day sentence.

A newborn boy to Mr. and Mrs. Merle Edwards at 717 West Main Street is the only New Year’s infant reported so far, born at 1:52 this morning weighing seven and one half pounds. County-wide results await more reports from other communities and the hospital had no early morning births recorded.

Several hundred Odd Fellows from seven southeastern Iowa counties will gather in Washington on Friday January 31 as guests of the local lodge. Delegations from about 28 lodges and similar number of Rebekah assemblies are expected along with Iowa grand lodge officers and guests. The day includes a banquet, musical and humorous programs, initiatory degrees for both orders, and an address by Llyn J. Irwin of Des Moines.
