Des Moines reports 917 new measles cases last week as Dr. J H Kin maman, child health director in the Iowa health department, warns the epidemic will last into early summer with little chance of subsiding soon.
Waterloo reports 1934 auto deaths down to 3 from 12 in 1933 with auto accidents rising from 609 to 820. The 1953 figure shows twelve people killed in auto accidents in Waterloo.
Des Moines Iowa farmers may release part of their sealed corn for feeding by paying 67 cents per bushel to the loan agency that financed the purchase. Assistant Secretary of Agriculture H C Aaberg was informed today.
Clyde L. Herring confirmed a relief grant of 1 678 779 dollars for Iowa for January from Federal Relief Administrator Harry Hopkins. The state trade requested 1 624 900 dollars.
A farmer near here was seriously injured when his clothing caught in a buzz saw while operating the machine Sunday in the local hospital. He nearly lost an arm and a leg before the engine was turned off and the saw stopped.

Funeral services were planned yesterday for Johnston who was killed when a shotgun he carried discharged while climbing a fence. His two older brothers carried him home after the fatal wound in the incident.
Roy Kirk, 21, of Eddyville, suffered a fracture in a slate fall at the Davis coal mine near Kirksville Iowa where he worked. He was imprisoned under the slate for about an hour and was taken to Alirey Hospital.
The frozen body of Prank Rozgane, 58, who disappeared December 12 from his farm near Lockman, was located Tuesday about 300 yards northwest of his house. Most clothing had been torn by dogs. Rozgane, unmarried, left $91 and instructions for distributing it among three nieces.

The Lindy Baby murder and kidnapping trial opened with juror Charles Walton as foreman followed by Rose Till and Verna Snyder. Outside the courthouse a crowd gathered though only fifty were let inside as the state listed 189 witnesses.

Ida May Pratt Patterson died at home in Ainsworth at 10 30 am after a less than week illness from pneumonia She would have been 70 in June Funeral services set for Friday at 1 30 pm at the Methodist church with burial in Ainsworth cemetery She was born in Washington county lived in the county all her life and 28 years in Ainsworth She was married 46 years ago to Albert Patterson who died 28 years ago She is survived by sisters Della Miller Harriett Pratt Emma Pratt and brother John M Pratt and was a member of the Ainsworth Methodist church
Washington county court house opens the new year with three new officers at work. Mrs KH Coulter becomes county recorder with Lois Holland as deputy. Robert R Noonan is named district court clerk with Edna Purvis as deputy. Purvis agrees to stay on a few months. Boyd Foster returns to county board after defeating TT E Brown by 11 votes in a recount. Roy Mapel elected chairman as the board begins routine duties.
The Y M C A welcomed about 800 guests for a New Year open house, matching last year’s turnout. A sixty piece Little Symphony orchestra played in the community room from 2 p m onward, while a reception committee greeted visitors. A checker tournament drew seven entries with W Alexander winning and Theodore Turner second. ping pong finals pending with five players remaining.
Funeral services for Thomas Osborne George 77 will be held at 2 this afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home. He died at 830 yesterday evening at his home 30 miles southwest of Washington after a period of ill health while still active on the farm. Rev D C Fulton of the United Presbyterian church will lead the service and burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. Born in Ohio he lived in the area and was a longtime farmer and church member.
The first Legion meeting of the month was held last night at the club rooms. Bill Brown reported for the radio committee as a General Electric console radio was accepted and installed, paid for by post finance officer Oral Larkin. Visiting Legionnaires from Victor Post toured 75 miles and planned to attend the 1st Dist convention in Muscatine March 20. Dr Laird urged a state community service report and proposed county level voting to boost Legion influence.
No births recorded at Washington county hospital since the new year. The Journal notes no newborns for 1955 and reports gifts offered by several merchants for the first baby of the year remain unlabeled.
Roll County Ohio records recount the life of a son of Jacob George and Mary Drake George born in 1857. He moved to Washington County at age 14, spent six years in Jewel County Kansas, married Mattie Coates near Superior Nebraska forty seven years ago, and remained a farmer. Survivors include his wife and two brothers J. M. George of Lamont Missouri and Oscar George of Washington. Funeral services were held six years ago yesterday for another brother W. P. George of Des Moines.
The Santa Monica note from Dee on New Year’s Eve questions how to extend the old year with pamphlets and books proposing plans to prolong the year. He suspects a brain trust may have schemes and will wait to see if any are adopted tomorrow.
Washington soldiers of Company K recall the 1916 border service and World War actions. The third annual reunion and dinner will be at Congress hotel on Tuesday January 15 with a 7 p.m. dinner. Putnam head officer and Dale Atkinson secretary lead the organizing efforts. about 100 cards will be mailed to members.
All grade school children are invited to a story telling hour at 2 30 tomorrow afternoon in the Y community room. The Fortnightly club Child Study department sponsors the event with Miss Blair Law assisting librarian of the Washington public library.
Howard Romine 21 and Hugh Denny about 40 of Rose Hill were struck by a car while placing tire chains on a stalled truck on primary road 161 near Ainsworth. Romine died at 12:55 AM at a county hospital. Denny survived with fractures and rib injuries. Car driven by John C. Lynn of Fairfield could not stop in time. The truck was hauling hogs to St. Louis. Romine and Denny were preparing to assist at the roadside when struck. Funeral arrangements for Romine were being made in Keota Rose Hill. Romine was to marry soon and was son of Ellis Romine.
Three people were hospitalized after a two car collision on McLaughlin hill southwest of town. The most seriously injured was Joe Seaton of Brighton, a passenger in a car driven by Karl DeWolfe of Brighton. Also hurt were Mrs. Ted Mortimore and a child riding with Mr Mortimore in the other car.
