Scores of Japanese and Chinese soldiers were killed in a fierce battle at Shanhaikwan which ended at 11 o clock today after fourteen hours of intermittent hostilities. One Japanese major was killed and ten Chinese were killed with many wounded. Shanhaikwan is a popular ons y city at the great wall.
A large crowd attended the State theater midnight New Year’s Eve show with noise makers feather ticklers and paper caps as 1932 began. Ralph and Clyde Pratt organized the event and guests enjoyed the festive atmosphere as the old year ended.
Indianapolis January 2 Senator James K Watson Republican floor leader expects the beer bill to pass though two hurdles exist delay and possible Democratic refusal to approve it this session to secure credit for the measure in the regular session.
Kinross basketball team faces Washington SY tonight at eight in the Y gym as the New Year Open House finale. A 6 20 tumbling show and a 7 girls game precede the men. Admission is free. Another local matchup features Cardinals junior college versus Burlington junior college at the high school gym this week.
Washington hosted 68 fewer tramps overnight in December than November, per city hall reports released by Mayor John W Applegate. In December 1932, 158 men stayed overnight at the city hall jail, down from 226 the prior month. Over 1200 meals were served at the city hall emergency kitchen, 613 by Charlie Welch for transients and 90 taken to local needy families, costing four cents per meal overall.

Iowa Public Health Commissioner D C Steelsmith reports 1932 had low morbidity and mortality. Diphtheria deaths six percent, pneumonia 1 766, tuberculosis 746 versus five years earlier 1496, 2 285, 2 148 respectively. Public health efficiency and hygiene cited as key factors.
Lieutenant Paul Putnam son of Mr and Mrs A F Putnam Washington has been in Nicaragua with the United States Marines and is leaving the turbulent country today with the force aiding the peace. He is in the air service led a flight of 25 planes and will move to Langley Field Virginia. he will serve with the marine force at Pensacola Florida. In Nicaragua he has been decorated several times by the American and Nicaraguan governments with four medals and a ribbon.
In Managua 2500 Nicaraguan guardsmen police the evacuation as United States Marines complete their withdrawal after 19 years. The aviation squadron nears homeward, 480 Marines entrain to the seacoast for transports. President Juan B. Sarosa formally assumes office and thanks the Marines for overseeing the November election. Dr Rodolfo Espinosa is inaugurated vice president.
John Matthews of Aurora arrived Saturday night and returned home this afternoon after a short weekend stay.
President elect Roosevelt relieved of duties for two months and plans talks in New York with congressional leaders on tax reform. He will travel to Muscle Shoals Alabama to inspect the nitrate plant and then to Warm Springs Georgia for a two week visit before a 110 day yachting cruise in Florida waters. He aims for rest with no press or government boats aboard.

C A Roberts aged 64 long time publisher of the Port Dodge Messenger died of pneumonia after a brief illness in Fort Dodge Iowa He had moved from Dubuque county as a youth He is survived by his widow and by George F B Roberts brother an economist at National City Bank and former director of the United States Mint
The December weather showed a temperature range of 77 degrees from 61 above zero to 16 below on the 16th. Six days were below freezing and precipitation totaled 1.82 inches with one heavy snowfall that lingered about a week before melting with the month’s only heavy rain.
Judge D OW Hamilton of Grinnell opened the January term of district court this morning. Little business was conducted today and the term is not expected to start until tomorrow as the court house remains mostly empty except for the clerk and sheriff offices.
The new year arrived quietly in Washington with watch light parties and a State theater show drawing a large crowd. Most residents slept before midnight and welcomed 1933 without fanfare, as the year began smoothly and without incident.
J. A. Taylor of Washington high school faculty will lead the prayer service for men opening the week of prayer. The service starts tomorrow at nine o'clock in the vacant room south of the Lemmon jewelry store. All men in the community are invited.
In Vallejo California on January 2 authorities searched the Elks Club ruins for the bodies of temporary guests feared dead in a New Year’s Day fire. Five men were known to have burned to death and a sixth man remained missing.
Twenty five moulder dam workmen narrowly escaped death when a ship dangling from a cable 800 feet above the Colorado river bed crashed into the Arizona wall. Fifteen men were injured as a misread signal between the flag man on the skip and the bank engineer caused the accident.
Washington county treasurer office closed Saturday with 3 292 automobile licenses issued and 329 truck licenses. Last license went to Clarence Phillips amid crowded lines. Year end total down from 4 010 last year as 200 applications remained. Expect more filings this week. December prices rise one dollar and February adds another. Driving without 1933 plates will face arrest and fines.
John Grosman aged 65 died about eleven o'clock this morning at the Goode hotel where he had lived for several years. He had been ill for days and his funeral was tentatively planned for Wednesday. The body was taken to A. Jones funeral home. He left a son Charles Grosman of Washington and a daughter Mrs Heiden of Agency Town. His wife had been dead about 35 years.
Katherine Flynn will become county recorder succeeding Mrs Minatie Green. Lois Holland will continue as deputy in the recorder office. Lucy Mapel joins the county board of supervisors succeeding B N Jedson. W R Kyle becomes coroner succeeding L A Jones after nine years in the post. Deputies remain unchanged subject to board approval. Board met Saturday to count year end office funds.
Iowa mines produced about a larger amount of coal in 1932 than in 1931 according to Hugh Lyndy secretary of the Iowa Coal Institute.
Federal authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of Fred Leiser, a Dubuque sportsman, after a raid in East Dubuque. Dan Anderson, assistant federal district attorney in Chicago, said Leiser is sought in connection with an alleged syndicate that handled beer alcohol and slot machines in Iowa and Illinois.
Julius Green a 27 year old convict died in a gun battle with officers after escaping from a train using a wire hook from a coat hanger. He had kidnapped Constable Truman Hamilton and led deputies on a car chase from Mojave to a canyon near Saugus where Hamilton was wounded and Green was shot through the head.
The domestic allotment relief plan cleared the House Agricultural Committee and will be introduced as soon as the House meets. It seeks minimum price supports for wheat cotton hogs and tobacco similar to wartime levels, with rice and dairy lacking relief. A 90 cent per bushel wheat floor and 12 cent cotton floor are indicated. dairy and rice aims failed.
