UCLA Bruins Extend Winning Streak In Sugar Bowl Tourney
UCLA, led by Bill Walton with 22 points and 16 rebounds, beat Illinois 71-64 to extend its winning streak to eight that season and 33 straight over three years. Nick Weatherspoon and Nick Conner kept the Illini within reach, but UCLA held the lead after a late first-half surge and avoided a large margin. The Bruins pursue the all-time major college win streak, currently held by San Francisco’s 60 straight. Marquette won Milwaukee Classic 75-73 over Wisconsin, while Maryland, Minnesota, Long Beach State, Brigham Young, Missouri, and Vanderbilt also won in various tournaments. Third-ranked North Carolina and ninth-ranked Southwest Louisiana sat idle. McMillen led Maryland with 32 points in a win over Syracuse.
