Washington recorded 0.52 inches of rain in the last 24 hours ending at 7 a.m. today, bringing a two day total to 1.09 inches. Overcast skies persisted mid-morning with forecasts predicting more rainfall for the area.
Des Moines man Michael Collis 29 died after being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a car in his garage. He had coached Cedar Rapids Kennedy to the Class AA title this season before resigning for personal reasons. Deputy medical examiner ruled death a self-inflicted incident.
Doyle Cass Green, a Perry man, faces murder charges over the fatal shooting of his wife Cheryl Ann, 24, at their Des Moines area home. Investigators say Green refused to speak, and the shooting occurred after a confrontation in the driveway near Mercy Hospital.
United Press International reports law enforcement and safety groups urging motorists to avoid drinking and driving during New Year travel. Bad weather adds hazards across many states. The National Safety Council projects 430 to 530 traffic deaths and 20,000 to 24,000 disabling injuries during the holiday period from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. Seat belt use could save about 100 lives and prevent around 4,000 injuries.
The Treasury Department will mail nearly $2.52 billion to 39 000 state and local governments for the second half of 1972 revenue sharing. They will receive population income and tax data used to calculate payments and may challenge amounts by Feb 12.

U.S. warplanes and ships hit targets inside North Vietnam for a 12th day, including Hanoi and Haiphong. A Huey helicopter crashed in the Mekong Delta, injuring four Americans and a Vietnamese. Nixon ordered a brief pause in bombing, with a New Year truce observed by South Vietnam.
Seer Reu ben Greenspan admitted he cannot confirm any quake for Jan 4 and plans to retire to Death Valley to write poetry. Mayor Alioto and seismologists dismissed the flap though some locals prepared to relocate at 9 AM. Greenspan claimed prior hits in 1935 and 1971 while missing 1951 1958 forecasts.
President Nixon ordered a halt to bombing above the 20th parallel while peace negotiations resume in Paris on January 8. Kissinger will return to Paris to resume talks with Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy as technical experts reconvene January 2.
A major winter storm swirled across the central Plains toward the Mississippi Valley bringing heavy snow to Kansas Nebraska South Dakota Minnesota Iowa Michigan and the Dakotas with blizzard conditions and wind chills. Blizzard warnings and travel advisories were issued as freezing rain and snow mix hit Minnesota Wisconsin and nearby states. Tornadoes and hail accompanied storms in Texas with damage near Fort Worth and Paris while heavy rains and flash flood watches extended from Kansas to Iowa.
An Eastern Airlines Tristar jet with 167 aboard crashed into the Everglades near Miami on landing. At dawn 77 survivors were counted. Rescue teams using helicopters and airboats recovered passengers in knee deep swamp as Frank Borman directed the operation.
In Humboldt Iowa Orin Olson of the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives denounces the end of low interest rural electrification loans as a blow to rural America. The USDA said co-ops must seek private funding at higher rates, affecting plans including Corn Belt Cooperative's 10 million loan for the Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Plant near Palo.
Charles M Hatch of Miles City Montana is crowned World Champion Liar of 1972 by the Burlington Liars Club in Wisconsin. Honorable mentions go to five others, with tall tales ranging from birds mistaking candy canes for Christmas to an undertaker sending get well cards to an unpopular old maid.
In Oakland California a jury found Hell's Angel leader Ralph Sonny Barger and three associates not guilty of murdering a Texas drug dealer. The verdict came after a trial in which the defendants faced murder and arson charges.
In Los Angeles area a Pierce College student Fred Bronner 21 remains missing after a fraternity prank left him stranded in rugged Tehachapi Mountains three days before Christmas. A nine man ground team and sheriff helicopter searched the terrain north of Los Angeles as temperatures fell to 40 degrees. The three fraternity members who initiated the prank say they returned after Christmas finding only a blue jacket. authorities have not filed charges and call the incident horseplay.
