Chicago January 1 The American Federation of Musicians led by James J Petrillo declared a nationwide ban on phonograph discs and transcriptions. The move aims to force radio stations halls and taverns to hire live musicians, with a renewed pledge never to return to recording.
The Leon Beatty post of the American Legion in Washington schedules a special meeting on universal military training. Major Irvin M. Parsons of the U S Air Force and Iowa State University ROTC will speak at 8 30 p m at the Legion room City Hall with a public discussion to follow.
Tennis W Hunter, 77, died at the county hospital at 6 35 yesterday evening after three years of ill health and a serious spell since last Saturday. He was born Sept 24 1871 near Danville Iowa and lived on a farm northwest of Washington for 45 years. Surviving are five children and three grandchildren. His wife died Feb 4 1910. Funeral at the Methodist church Saturday at 3 PM with burial at Rim Grove cemetery. Arrangements by IL Jones Funeral Home.
County treasurer reports 1947 auto licenses totaled 2202 and 1947 car licenses reached 5760. January 1948 shows remaining owners to license before February first to avoid delinquency. Truck licenses 567 plus 1 regular trailer 35 farm trailers and 10 motorcycles. December licensing was down from January 1947 totals which were 2818 cars 605 trucks 1 trailer and 368 farm trailers.
Marriage licenses issued yesterday afternoon to John F Bayless and Dorothy Jean Rosenbohm of Northboro Iowa Truman Christner of Goshen Indiana and Jeanette M Krabill of Washington.
Otha E. Babb age 70 died suddenly at his home two miles south of Washington yesterday afternoon from a heart attack. He had heart trouble for four years and was a longtime resident of Washington county. Survived by wife Clara Gardner a daughter Dorothy two sisters and a brother. Funeral at L. A. Jones funeral home Friday at 2 PM conducted by Dr. Frea b P. Miller with burial at Elm Grove cemetery.
A violent New Year’s Eve tornado struck Cotton Valley Louisiana causing at least 13 deaths and numerous injuries. Homes and businesses were destroyed, leaving families homeless as residents searched ruins for loved ones and waited for aid in emergency clinics. The storm's seven minute path left widespread devastation across the town.
Funeral services for Mrs Join Boren will be held at two o clock Friday afternoon at St Johns Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa. Mrs Boren a former resident died in Chariton hospital earlier this week. The report notes storm damage in Cotton Valley and relief efforts by local agencies and nearby towns.

Des Moines reports 1947 total registrations of 948,112 up from 854,495 in 1946. License collections rose to 15,017,242 from 12,865,066. Automobile registrations climb to 674,570, license receipts to 8,276,976. Truck registrations reach 153,855 and truck licenses 5,457,484.
