Governor Robert D Blue said he would veto a bill raising the Iowa governor salary to 10 000 a year if applied to him personally. He noted no constitutional bar but would not approve such action for his own term. The measure, approved by the Senate, sits in a house committee awaiting action.

Joseph Chadima 75 president of Hubbard Ice Co. suffocated in a house fire in Cedar Rapids. Firemen found his body in an upstairs bedroom at 4 13 am. He lived alone. This followed another fire tragedy as Mary Sales 70 suffered severe burns when her clothing caught fire from a stove. Dan Kruidenjer and John Dedic helped extinguish the flames and wrap her in a blanket. Her condition was listed as fair.
Representative Karl M. Le Compte introduces a bill to mint a special Iowa centennial half dollar limited to 100 000 coins. The treasury would receive par value, with profits used for centennial observances as directed by the governor. A commemorative stamp is also planned next year by the post office.
DES MOINES farmers are urged to store high moisture corn in ventilated cribs or outdoors in proper storage as weather and labor shortages slow progress. Iowa's 1944 crop was unusually wet due to late planting and early frost, leaving much starch in solution and up to three fourths of corn not fit for safe keeping in some areas.
British and American dispatches report Germany admits losing Neustettin to Soviet forces threatening a trap in northeastern Pomerania. Rokossovsky’s drive nears the Baltic as 40 miles in four days push toward the coast and the Stettin corridor.
The bill offering induction exemption for essential farm workers won approval in the House. Congressmen including Thomas Ek. Martin of the first Town district backed the measure for food production and farm labor needs. All Iowa members supported it. legislation moves to the Senate.
Town families received 15.229 million dollars in life insurance death benefits during 1944, up from 14.13 million the year before, as reported by the Institute of Life Insurance. The increase in New York State totaled 8.5 percent for the period.

The Navy's Nurses Corps must grow quickly to meet expanding needs. As of January 1945 the corps held 3,000 nurses, with thousands more required. recruitment official Chief John N. Van Qosdel urged women in the Burlington area to call or write the Navy recruiting station for information and questions.
ESTHERVILLE The Chamber of Commerce plans a protest to the Office of Defense Transportation and the Minneapolis St. Louis Railway against discontinuance of trains 17 and 18 on the M and St. L. The group says these trains handle large mail and express shipments and their removal will cut mail service to 12 northern towns, forcing star routes and leaving Terris Huntington and Dunnell without passenger service.

Applicants must be registered nurses, graduates of an accredited School of Nursing, and a high school graduate, aged 21 to 40. Divorced nurses are accepted. married nurses may not resign on marriage. Assignments place nurses at naval hospitals near home for about 46 months.
United Press reports Tokyo's Ueno Station and freight yards heavily damaged by air raids with 240 blocks of the industrial heart burned. American Super Fortresses dropped over 1,050 tons of bombs with no losses, while Marines assault Iwo Jima and Allied troops push Japanese forces back toward Manila as battles unfold across the Pacific.

The annual school election in Washington will be held Monday March 12 with two board of education seats up. Incumbents Frank Bostwick and Fred Downing are involved. Bostwick seeks a second full term while Downing will not seek re election. Nomination papers must be filed ten days before election, deadline noon Friday.
Rotary and Y's Men clubs held a joint meeting after their speaker failed to arrive. They debated Washmelon postwar conditions, with talks on agriculture, jobs for veterans, disability employment, and plans for a gymnasium auditorium and recreation space in Washington.
Two U S infantry divisions the 104th and 8th broke through the Erft river line near Cologne to establish two bridgeheads on the east bank a short distance from the Rhine as German resistance collapsed in the face of a strong pursuit. American 1st Army forces pressed toward Rhine while Lt Gen Simpson’s 9th Army advanced into the Ruhr valley driving toward Dusseldorf. News blackout was ordered as German communications failed.
Charles Ragan received a telegram from Ruth Nevada stating his brother Harry Ragan fell 24 feet from a telephone pole. He suffered a broken pelvis and possible internal injuries. Taken to Steptoe Valley Hospital East Ely in very serious condition. The accident occurred February 28. Harry formerly lived here and works for Kennecott Copper Corporation in the west. Charles awaits further word.
Ainsworth reports Walter McFarland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob McFarland, was slightly wounded February 2 in Luzon while serving with Troop D, 118th Cavalry. He had previously trained at Camp Bowie Texas and served in New Guinea and the Philippines including the Leyte invasion.
