Health officials blame a staphylococcus toxin for illness among Iowa residents who ate cream puffs. Unboiled milk used in custard likely source. illness began about two weeks ago and all residents reportedly recovered.
Police took into custody Monday a 15 year old boy at a Cedar Rapids grocer's store who gave the name Irvin Gerstenberg. He said he ran away from Independence because classmates taunted him as "The man the German" and he could not stand it any longer.
DES MOINES public safety officials said a 1942 license plate on the front of a car is illegal even if a 1945 plate is on the rear and a windshield slicker is current. Some filling stations advised customers to keep the front plate to help identify gasoline coupons but the Office of Price Administration told motorists to write new numbers on the back of coupons instead.
Fort Dodge police recovered most of the $14,600 stolen from Charles Bushnell’s apartment last week. The large denominations were found by a janitor in a toilet drain while fixing a clogged toilet. Bushnell’s daughter-in-law Loretta Higgenbotham described a violent robbery in which she was struck and knocked down.
Report presented to President Virgil M Hancher by William Coder shows 223 veterans enrolled across colleges. Fifty seven percent are former $8 001 students with average ages: liberal arts 22.4, graduate 27.2, engineering 25.1, law 24.3, dentistry 23.4. Of these, 110 are under the bill of rights, 27 under rehabilitation, 6 under neither law. 26 percent married. Entities include Army 85, Army Air Forces 428, Navy 16, Marines and Coast Guard 7, and foreign service veterans 24.
Crawfordsville resident J. Young aged 85 died at his home after months of poor health. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville, with burial in Crawfordsville Cemetery. L. A. Jones Funeral Home of Washington in charge. Paul Moore of Ames writes that his son Tom Moore is in a hospital in Eingland with frostbite on his feet but not seriously wounded. The note clarifies previous reports of serious wounding.
More than 25000 farm deferred Iowa youths under 26 are undergoing daily pre induction physicals, with the rate stated at 7000 examinations monthly by Brig Gen Grahl, director of the state selective service. The program targets agriculturally deferred registrants in Iowa as part of the induction process.
Berlin reports the Red Army broke through central Pomerania advancing from the Baltic coastal area toward Bublitz and Rummelsburg, seizing a bridgehead on the Neisse and pushing toward Breslau as part of a broader drive toward Berlin.
Grahl said the examinations will run until mid May, the corn-planting period, with likely induction for only about one in four in the farm-deferred group though all will be examined.

Arthur Peters Dutch Creek township Pete Perdock Marion township and John E Powell Sev enty six township. Enumerating progresses well in the other ten townships with workers already at work.
Louis McFadden, missing since the Houston was reported lost in a 1942 East Indies battle, is now believed alive as a prisoner of war in Thailand. A May 19 1944 card from Louis, sent via his wife and confirmed by his father, states he is well and in captivity.
United Press reports American carrier planes struck Tokyo area targets in a two day raid. About 75 percent of the large 40 miles northwest plant was left in ruins as Marine forces assault Iwo Jima action continued.
The county raised 2266.60 from the annual Christmas seal sale with 69 percent kept for local tuberculosis work and 1 percent allocated to the Iowa Tuberculosis Association. Washington city bought 847.45 in seals, rural schools 870.77, and towns shared the rest.
London February 27 Prime Minister Churchill announced Poland will receive upper Silesia Danzig and most of East Prussia with a long Baltic sea front. Additional German territory east of the Oder may be decided at the peace conference. He named the greater part of East Prussia west of Koenigsberg and noted Russia might keep the capital of the Junkers province.
Des Moines reports the Minneapolis and St. Louis railway will stop passenger trains No. 17 and 18 between Fort Dodge and Winthrop in compliance with a 1944 LOD order. The order required suspending trains that averaged under 35 percent occupancy in November. A separate note mentions an alleged attack on Hachijo yesterday by planes.
Allied forces push through the Rhineland near Cologne as American 1st and 9th Armies attack along the Rhine line. Nine miles of advance press toward Muenchen Gladbach and Koenigshoven amid German disarray and retreat, with Hodges and Simpson commanding thrusts and panzer units reinforcing the last river line.
London reports more than 2500 Allied warplanes struck Germany for the 15th straight day. U S Sth Airforce led a 2000 plane dawn raid on Halle and Leipzig while RAF Lancasters and Halifaxes bombed Mainz railway yards. A British force hit a benzol plant near Gelsenkirchen as Swiss claims noted two bombers shot down.
