Former Massachusetts governor and U S Treasury secretary George Sewell Boutwell died at his Groton home at age 87 from pneumonia. Born 1818 in Brookline, he served eight terms in the state legislature, led the Democratic House, governed 1851 to 1859, helped found the Republican Party, was a Johnson impeachment manager, treasury secretary 1869 to 1873, and a U S senator 1873 to 1879.
The senate sitting as a court of impeachment acquitted Judge Swayne on all twelve articles of impeachment brought by the house of representatives.
Newton Iowa February 27 Maria Johnson of St Louis is held to await grand jury action on charges of attempting to kidnap her 18 year old daughter Mabel. Bond set at 500 and furnished. The case stems from a bid to again assume guardianship over the child who has lived with four families since infancy. For seven years she has been cared for by Mr and Mrs Storks ten miles north of Newton.
Through the death of Mrs Harriett M Littlefield widow of George L Littlefield a former local manufacturer Brown University inherits the estate real and personal valued at about 500 000 from the will of Littlefield made to the university on the death of his wife.
Nashville Indiana February twenty seven Edward Harding charged with the murder of William Kelly twenty two years ago is acquitted by a jury. James S Harding father of the man released was tried and acquitted of the time charge shortly after the crime was committed.
An international inquiry at Paris has reported in favor of Britain regarding the firing on the Gamecock fishing fleet by Russia’s Second Pacific Squadron led by Vice Admiral Rojestvensky. The commission finds Rojestvensky responsible for the incident but justifies readiness to resist potential attack. Admiral Davis commented on the findings and their impact.
Representative John J. Esch of Wisconsin, author of the Esch Townsend bill regulating railroad rates, is a Wisconsin native serving his third term in Congress. A lawyer by training, he is deeply interested in military affairs and served as judge advocate general of Wisconsin in 1804 and 1805.

Most funds stemmed from tax procedures tied to the estate of Senator John Sherman. Kansas City reports Lathrop to become general solicitor for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railway after Kenna resigns.
Chicago February 27 1908 opening markets show hog receipts 42000 left over from yesterday. Prospects for hogs steady with light 4 55 to 4 85 mixed packers 4 65 to 4 95 heavy shipping 4 70 to 4 71 rough 4 70 to 4 97. Cattle 25000 steady to 10 lower. Sheep 25000 down by about 10.
Receipts and shipments for past week and yesterday show cattle and hog markets steady to lower. Bid ranges appear mixed with light hogs and shipping grades near 84 price levels while cattle and sheep show softer demand, with natives and western lambs quoted lower in places. Grain market remains strong to higher overall.
Denver February 27 The guber natorial contest committee grants more time for briefs. Adams claims a statewide majority of about 2 070 after accounting for disputed Denver precincts and county totals. The Peabody side argues many Denver votes were fraudulent and should be rejected.
J G Caton once president of Dedham bank was found dead in Wichita Kansas after fleeing a $50000 default. Mayor Toovey of Dedham confirmed the body and noted Caton had lived with his uncle Joseph Corwin in Wichita. Detectives had been tracking Caton who vanished two months earlier and headed to Oregon. Mrs Caton reportedly was not in Dedham and was said to be in Des Moines.
Elgin reports Mayor Hubbard will return for the May 7 council meeting to decide his stance on the ordinance leasing the municipal lighting plant to the Aurora and Southern Traction Company. The telegram clarified rumors he might not return before the contract takes effect.
