Kindergarten roundup set for Lincoln and Stewart Schools

Mid-Prairie Band Heads to New Orleans Mardi Gras Parades

The 80 member Mid-Prairie High School Band leaves Thursday at noon for New Orleans to perform in two Mardi Gras parades the parade of Venus on Sunday February 29 and the parade of Zeus on Monday March 1. Led by drum majorette Cindy Bowser and director Bob Gaston the group will tour the French Quarter harbor area and the Super Dome before returning home Tuesday March 2.

Mount Pleasant residents charged in bombing death case

Doris Wellington widow of Walter Wellington faces two counts of perjury in an Iowa grand jury probe into the Sept. 7 explosion that killed the Mount Pleasant used car operator behind a local bank. Donald Gartin, former Wellington family attorney, is also charged.

Senate backs seven month daylight saving bill

The Senate approved a bill 70 to 23 to extend daylight saving time to seven months next year and sent it to the House. Supporters cite energy savings and fewer crashes and crimes while critics warn of darker mornings for children and farm hardship across time zones. The current Uniform Time Act of 1966 would apply until House action.

Mail mistakenly taken to city dump

Postal officials report first class mail and parcels bound for delivery were dumped at the Memphis Bulk Mail Center and later recovered from the city landfill. Postal inspectors sifted through trash behind the sanitation truck and recovered mail including food stamp booklets packages magazines and cancelled checks.

Lawmakers sue to halt rural post office closings

Forty four members of Congress led by Rep. Thomas Harkin file suit in U S District Court to stop closing thousands of rural post offices. Harkin says the Postal Service pursues a dedicated effort while the GAO long ago recommended closing about 12 000 of 18 000 offices as an economy move.
