Washington Community High School's symphonic concert band will present its mid winter concert Thursday at 8 pm in the gymnasium of the high school.
Higgins resigns as plant manager of Advance Ross Electronics in Washington and Robert Riley is named the new manager. Riley formerly managed the Burlington plant. Higgins becomes area director for Partake Inc in 16 SE Iowa counties. Partake, three years old, sells franchised business concepts and marketing services. Higgins and wife attended Partake workshop in Oak Brook IL and planned a franchise lookover. office to open in SE Town.
The Cuban Exile Revolutionary Council said a naturalized American electronics technician, Robert B Walder, is directing construction in Cuba of underground atomic installations with Soviet rockets. Walder, a German-born U S citizen in his 30s, is said to be installing labs in caves at Santo Tomas and Los Portales in Pin r del Rio Province, according to former Cuban Premier Samuel A De Varona.
ISU alumni in the area will gather Saturday February 29 at 6 30 p m in the schoolhouse on the county fairgrounds A potluck supper is planned followed by a program with a guest speaker All who have attended ISU or prospective Ames students are invited Each couple should bring table service and two dishes Coffee rolls and ice cream will be provided
Lois Jean Greiner of West Chester and Robert Clayton Martin of rural Brighton drove northeast and collided on highways 92 and 1 north of Washington at 5 30 p m according to the County Sheriff s office The Greiner auto swerved across the road into the Martin car which was behind the truck going south Damage was estimated at 1500 for the Greiner vehicle and 1200 for the Martin car No injuries reported
City police reported a minor collision this morning at 7 a.m. at North Avenue B and West Third. Lester Leroy Worley driving a southbound pickup failed to yield to Wilma Pauline Bolander in the eastbound auto, causing $125 damage to the truck and $250 to Bolander's car with no injuries.
In Des Moines UPI dispatch reports committees continued sifting through multiple reapportionment plans during a special session. Lawmakers queued proposals on meat labeling and local junior college bonds while two acts aimed at legalizing past votes and a regional bridge project moved through rules and committees.
John Winga Jr leads Coffee Day activities in Washington and coordinates local planning with Charles Capper to raise funds for mentally retarded children. Restaurants statewide join Friday March 6 by serving coffee on the house to donations, with stores in Ainsworth closing 10 am to noon and the bank closing Friday morning.
Washington Community School district wins two federal grants under Title II of the National Defense Education Act. Supt. John V. Phleger announced approval for 2305.28 dollars of junior high science equipment and 1871.68 dollars for the senior high foreign language department, with 50 percent reimbursed. High school funds buy tape recorder, sound projector, blackout shades, overhead projector. junior high buys eight microscopes, a thermo transparency maker, overhead projector, and science books.
Gerald Kephart presided as the Washington JOOF lodge met Tuesday evening. The charter was draped in memory of Stanley McKeown, longtime treasurer who died recently, and in honor of Past Grand Masters Jesse Wheeler of Boone and Roy Foster of Red Oak. Earl Nicola was elected treasurer to fill the unexpired term and was installed in that post.
Mrs James Birney Route 3 Washington has been asked to meet February 26 and 27 in Ames with the State Extension Advisory Committee to discuss educational program activities of the Cooperative Extension Service of Iowa State. She is one of four from the southeast district and will serve a three year term beginning 1962, assisting with evaluation of current and projected programs and extension needs.
DES MOINES interim committee reviews more than 1 million dollars in pending requests from state agencies. The Board of Control seeks 340000 to relocate wells for the Saylorville dam plan, with federal reimbursement. Other asks cover sewage work at Fort Madison and Anamosa, child cottages at Toledo, bunk houses at Riverview, land sale at Clive, Fort Madison wiring, Mitchellville dormitory, staff hires for Fort Madison and Anamosa, land purchases in southeast Iowa, and vocational education staffing.
The Senate passed the 11.5 billion tax cut by 74 to 19 and, minutes after Johnson signs at 3:30 p.m., he will speak to the nation on its benefits. Payroll withholding falls from 18 to 14 percent, boosting weekly pay by about 4 to 5 dollars for many workers. Two thirds of cuts for individuals are retroactive to Jan 1, cutting the tax bill about 19 percent.
W A McGinnis 68 of Ainsworth died Monday in Monterey California after hospital care following a weekend transfer. He was a farmer, former mayor of Ainsworth, bank director, Farm Service Insurance agent, WWI veteran, and active in the American Legion and local church. He is survived by his wife two daughters a son six grandchildren and multiple siblings. Funeral Friday in Ainsworth with military rites at Elm Grove Cemetery.
United Press International reports a forecast for Iowa with mostly fair skies east tonight and north, partly cloudy west with light snow possible by morning in the extreme northwest. Warmer conditions follow northwest and extreme west tonight. Thursday brings more clouds and warmth with occasional light snow in the north and central. Temperatures range from the low teens to mid twenties tonight and 20s to 30s Thursday across regions. The five day period is expected to be near normal with a slight warming trend and no notable precipitation or impacts anticipated.
