Des Moines reports Iowa surpassed its Series E bond quota by four percent led by W. L. Clark of the state war finance committee. Total EK bond sales stand at 68.8 million, with the overall drive hitting 212 million dollars, 19 percent above target.
Jack Ralph Faust and Darrell Copenhaver were each sentenced to 10 years hard labor at Fort Madison for breaking and entering in the mapleton Kraft Clothing robbery of December 24 in which a loaded cate of $1290 was taken. They had already received 10-year terms at Le Mars for robbing an Akron liquor store on November 16.
Last December Thomas Morris of Waterloo, private pilot, crashed after striking a cow on land adjoining Canfield airport. He sues W M Brinker for 115.70 dollars, alleging Brinker failed to keep cattle on his property. Damages include broken landing gear and fuselage, cow only slightly injured.
Lieut. Col. Orson B. Powers reports Camp Dodge processed the greatest number of men in a single day during World War II. He notes the installation was designed for 1,000 men daily and that Thursday approached that capacity, though he did not disclose the exact total.
First Lieutenant Elmer J. Lamm 24 of Freeport Illinois a ferry command pilot was killed when his P-51 Mustang crashed on the Eckermann farm eight miles north of Davenport. Investigators reported zero ceiling and the lone pilot appeared to be lost. Witness Eckermann saw the plane strike the road near his house bounce and explode with wreckage strewn across the field and the body found half a mile away.
The Interstate Commerce Commission on Friday authorized the Burlington railroad to abandon two lines in Iowa. The 27 mile Merle Junction to Clarinda line and the 68 mile Humeston to Clearfield route will be discontinued in February 1945 after operating at a substantial loss.
London dispatch reports the US strategic air forces in Europe say this week’s air blows wiped out Germany’s main aerial defense. The nightly offensive, including Augsburg Regensburg Stuttgart and Furth strikes, reduced Hitler’s fighter production to “remnants” as Germany scrambled 250 to 300 fighters in combat.

G A Haygreen, longtime manager of the McLellan store in Washington for eight years, transfers to the McLellan store at Pekin Illinois. Mrs Morris Beenpblossom, assistant manager and longtime employee, is named manager of the Washington store. The Washington McLellan, established 1929, has had three managers with Fred Stow and Haygreen preceding Beenpblossom. Haygreen family plans to move to Pekin are not finalized.
Judge J. G. Patterson ruled for Blanche Davis in the suit by Commercial Savings Bank trustees against the estate of C. O. Davis. The decision found no fraud by any Davis party and upheld the deed to Blanche Davis as valid. Fulton was found to have paid full value and to be an innocent purchaser.
President Roosevelt announced a review of all occupational draft deferments to quickly free personnel for the armed forces. About 5 million men hold deferments, with the nation short about 150 to 200 thousand trained personnel in the army. The memo urges use of older and returned soldiers and women in critical industry and agriculture to balance the manpower pool.
Frank Burdette Moore of Columbus Junction and Martha Ellen Caldwell of Washington obtained a marriage license at the courthouse today.
Washington county war finance chair G E Mace reports county bonds totaling 1 119 306 25 toward a 1 080 000 quota for the fourth war loan with expected further purchases. Less than 10 000 remains to reach EK bonds. Mace expects extra I bonds to push past Washington county’s target. March court term set with Judge P J Siegers presiding. March 13 opening.
George Baker appointed captain of the local Iowa State Guard headquarters company succeeding Captain Howard Miller with Alvin Rommel named lieutenant succeeding Lieutenant Rodney Arnold. The pair, both World War I veterans, will work with Lieutenant Rodney Kephart as about twenty five business leaders attended the meeting at the Y to discuss civilian protection and emergency duties.
Washington county Methodist churches join in a Week of Dedication with nightly services Monday through Friday led by Revs. Miller Robins Peterson Pinnell and Munster. Services start 7 30 except Tuesday at 7 00 for Rotary forum. Sunday concludes with personal dedication appeal. Last year the offering neared one million dollars for global missionary work.
The Rotary club sponsored series continues with Jay C. Field of Hartford speaking at the high school auditorium on The Americas as Contributors to a New World Order. Field's career spans Peru Bolivia Argentina and the United States with roles in Y.M.C.A. education and missions. The 8 pm lecture offers tickets at the door Journal office or Y.M.C.A.
The Washington county hospital, funded by county tax, employs a nearly 80 year old male nurse from Cotter, Isaac Stone, who works daily to keep male patients shaved and clean, with option for outside help. A patient story continues on page 2.
Soviet forces under Rokossovsky push toward Bobruisk as German counterattacks fail to halt the advance. Govorov and Popov move on Pskov and surrounding towns, while pocketed German units suffer heavy losses. At Anzio, Allied troops repel another probing German attack east of Littoria.
A beneficial shower drenched the area adding .49 inch and pushing weekly rainfall over one inch. Thunder and lightning accompanied the last night shower, followed by clearing skies and more clouds. Yesterday set the warmest winter high at 63 degrees.
