More than 63 000 Iowans filed federal income tax returns and paid 18 096 640 80 this year. E H Birmingham, Iowa internal revenue collector, noted that a year earlier 29 000 taxable returns paid 7 616 406 45 had been filed. The 18 million dollars this year is in addition to amounts withheld by employers.
Des Moines reports Carl N. Knox of Sigourney appeals to the state supreme court from a life sentence for murdering his bedridden father Walter. Convicted by a Keokuk county jury on November 25, 1948, he was sentenced to hard labor at Fort Madison penitentiary. Knox claims 52 trial irregularities.
Officials at the Grundy Center hot mill report $350000 in payments to about 400 farmers who grew hemp for processing. Receipts total 824 tons at an average of 41.50 per ton, with yields ranging from two to five tons per acre. Contracts are being signed for the 1944 crop as the mill plans to contract 4250 acres, slightly more than last year.
The State University of Iowa marks its ninety seventh birthday noting 7304 graduates and alumni in service and 70 dead in armed forces. The university began Feb 25 1847 when Iowa joined statehood and a radio program from WSUI Iowa City will air 9 to 9 30 p.m.
DES MOINES Iowa state officials learned a Connecticut error sent as a carload of eggs to Iowa. The Soldiers Orphans Home Davenport and Mount Pleasant state hospital were to receive a share, but WEA advised the Connecticut wire was sent in error and Iowa eggs are available for shipment.
The Office of Price Administration reports 2,294,218 copies of War Ration Book 4 issued in Iowa. The release includes county distribution totals across the state.
The Senate voted 72 to 14 to override President Roosevelt and enact a 2.3152 billion tax bill into law. Senators Pepper and Lucas framed the vote as political, while Gillette of Iowa and Wilson opposed the veto upholding the override.
Persons seeking old age and survivors insurance payments may contact Frank H. Daly, manager of the Ottumwa Social Security office, at 9:00 a.m. in the Post Office building in Washington on Feb 29. Daly visits monthly. call him Tuesday with questions about the Social Security Act. Widows and children of recently deceased workers should inquire about monthly benefits. those 65 or older should learn about eligibility if retired or about to retire and have worked in covered employment.
Gen Edelmiro J. Farrell assumed the presidency of Argentina temporarily following Gen Pedro Ramirez's sudden resignation. Col Juan Peron and Col Tauber stood with Farrell as he clarified his interim role and potential cabinet changes. Acting Sec Stettinius warned that coup reports caused security concerns for the region.

Berlin reports from the Scandinavian Telegraph Bureau say Soviet forces captured Vitebsk, the northern base in White Russia, as sensational Baltic developments were anticipated. The dispatch notes the loss marks a keystone base for Germany on the Eastern Front.
London reports three days ago Russia conveyed mild armistice terms to Britain and the United States for allied governments. Finnish government informed for consideration. Terms include reestablishment of the 1940 border and internment of German troops, with Soviet entry into Finland to help against Germans and to leave after the war. Funeral services for John J. Davison were held at the Cottonwood church near Wayland. Rev. Ivan Riess of Washington and Rev. H. B. Hulse of Cottonwood officiated. Pallbearers included Fred Edwards Perry Turner Karl Nicola Richard Hesseltine Merle Leazer and Ralph Kauffman. Burial followed in Cottonwood cemetery.
Michigan State College accepted a 15000 dollar grant from Swift and Co of Chicago to conduct research into turkey diseases.
The county board will not release names of men called for examination or their home addresses. This follows an opinion by Col. Ralph A. Lancaster and reflects that information will be printed only after induction, making the call date definite but currently undetermined.

U S naval forces sank a troop ship a cargo vessel nine barges and a Japanese destroyer and air forces attacked Duke of York Island New Britain and an atoll in the Marshall Islands with unclear names. About 330 Japanese died with 73 survivors from the transport sinking.
