Judge G. W. Stillman sentenced H. J. Carris of Storm Lake to three years in Fort Madison penitentiary after Carris pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated. Carris had two prior convictions for the same offense in Clay County.
Albert Frazen suffered face and arm burns and penetrating slivers after a home made explosive meant to split a log detonated while he worked astride the log. The incident occurred as Frazen mixed chlorite and sugar in a hole in the wood.
Iowa City hosts a weekend of forensic events with the annual women’s debate tournament on March 8 and 9 at the State University of Iowa. The first annual freshman sophomore college debate tournament is also set for March 9.
Several Iowa school executives will attend the six day convention of the American Association of School Administrators in St. Louis. Iowa participants include Dr. Harry K. Newburn of University High School Iowa City and Superintendent B C Berg of Newton.
Cedar Rapids Amana society board reports 1939 sales totaling 1,664,319 across 61 enterprises, up 23 percent from 1938. Payroll reached 341,298, up about 44,000. Arthur Barlow resigns as business manager after eight years, with hopes to keep him as advisor.
Cedar Falls ISU teachers college hosts final events in Religious Emphasis week with Grace Sloan Overton writer and lecturer on marriage and family scheduled to discuss Preparation for Home Life at an all college assembly. Drake University President D W Morehouse spoke Thursday on Science Religion and Reality.
New officers for the Central Iowa Optometric Association are Dr. C. C. Kitchen of Oskaloosa as chairman, K M Kaup of Des Moines as vice chairman, and Dr. Terry Anderson of Des Moines as secretary.
Iowa City Dean George D. Stoddard of the State University of Iowa delivers a Baconian lecture titled Intelligence Its Nature and nurture, seen as a preview of his forthcoming report for the National Education association in St. Louis. He argues intelligence can rise or fall with environment, opposing another psychology school.
Bobby Martin of Ottumwa, a four time Iowa checker champion, retained his title by defeating Victor Davis of Fort Dodge in a long playoff at the Iowa Checker association annual tournament in Cedar Rapids. Davis also has held the crown four times. Martin won the decisive last series of four games to secure the 1940 crown.
Robert K. Goodwin, Redfield mayor and Republican short term candidate, opened his campaign in the sixth district during the Frederick Douglass memorial dinner hosted by the Young Negro Republican clubs of Iowa at St. Paul’s AME Church. He urged voters to consider the times and praised the fellowship in the country.
Ada B Park Davis died at 9 a m at her home four miles north of Brighton after a stroke on Sunday night. She lived in Washington years, born March 29 1864 near Coppock, daughter of Abraham T Park and Amanda Kline. Survived by daughter Mrs Kate Gibson Des Moines and three sisters Mrs Mary Fox Washington Mrs Jessie Clark and Mrs L P Burham Long Beach California. Burial Hillcrest Cemetery Brighton. Funeral by Rev E J Shook Wayland Methodist Church. Hoskins funeral home Brighton in charge.
Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia said he would answer questions about his candidacy in the Illinois presidential primary when his plane reaches Chicago at 7 p.m. Central Time. He planned to address a luncheon tomorrow at the national farm institute in Des Moines and declined to discuss withdrawal plans.
Mise Ellen Nash fell 14 feet from a rear upper porch rail in Waukon while airing bedding. She escaped broken bones but suffered severe bruising.
Mary Olive DeWitt nee Knott, 56, died at Washington County Hospital after a six week illness from a fall and broken hip. Funeral services set at L. A. Jones Funeral Home and Fre donia Methodist Church with burial in Indian Creek Cemetery. Survived by husband W R DeWitt and seven children, plus mother, siblings, and six grandchildren.
Federal agents rounded up 538 individuals in 1939 for robbing post offices and later convicted numbers including O10, reflecting a broad crackdown on wartime mail theft and related offenses.

Achille Grondim aged 44 and Mary Louise Grondim aged 40 were executed in the Montreal jail yard for poisoning Villen Grondim, the former husband of Mary Louise. The couple had murdered him over weeks and wed after his funeral, in a case likened to New York’s Ruth Snyder-Judd Gray affair.
Mrs Elizabeth Clomp, 61, arrested for stealing a dress and two sweaters valued at 10.45 from a department store. During search, police found 27009 in her purse. She stated she liked to take things and could not help it.
Police halted ten pickets at the J I Case tractor plant gates as farm equipment workers members tried to block access to the back to work group. Richard Vandermeulen, plant local union president, was among those charged with disorderly conduct after a picket blocked the main entrance with a parked car. Company notes 180 workers entered, up slightly from the prior day.

Des Moines reports state department appoints two Iowans to foreign service. Paul H. Pearson becomes assistant trade commissioner and third secretary at Berlin and vice consul. Charles E. Brookhart moves to London as trade commissioner and consul. In 1939 Britain bought large U.S. steel and iron shipments.

London reports Royal Air Force bombarded German warships in Helgoland bay. Nazi planes renew coastal shipping attacks as Britain and allies push sea warfare. One German plane shot down near Essex coast. one British plane lost returning from Helgoland. Nine Nazi submarines sunk or damaged in ten days. Winston Churchill touts 1700 auxiliary naval ships in service. In Finland, Soviet attack on the Mannerheim Line near Viipuri by heavy forces with tanks and artillery. Finnish losses claimed. communications disrupted between Helsinki and Copenhagen.
Washington lawmakers report the house banking committee rejected a proposal to grant Fin land an eighty million dollar war loan for arms or other American commodities.
Des Moines reports say M. Evans agricultural administrator told the National Farm Institute that American farmers will not profit from the European war. He warned of a surplus problem and said Britain and France will buy militarily rather than agricultural goods. Other speakers shared pessimistic views on war effects on U S agriculture. In Reno Nevada bicycle tag requirements expanded, with a thousand tags issued last year and an additional 600 now needed.
