Washington county high school basketball tournament begins Friday with six teams after Ainsworth and Riverside withdraw. Riverside forfeits opening game vs Washington. Ainsworth forfeits vs West Chester. First night features Wellman vs Crawfordsville at 7 30 and Kalona vs Brighton at 8 30. Saturday schedule includes West Chester vs winner of Wellman Crawfordsville at 10 and Washington vs winner of Kalona Brighton at 11, with finals at 8 30. Depositors and the bank disputed the original 2550 claim, prompting a February 9 hearing and today’s decision. The receiver is ordered to pay the reduced amount in full.
Pittsburgh officials report the dancing marathon still underway after 54 hours despite protests. Dallas report states John Lawrence, bank president and former Mesquite mayor, found guilty of murder in the death of Mesquite farmer Jack Kimbell. Lawrence was sentenced to 50 years after a short jury deliberation. The shooting followed an October 8 1926 argument over Kimbell’s wife amid a $50 000 alienations suit.
Max Hart, 74, vice-president of Hart, Schaffner & Marx, Chicago clothiers, died yesterday after a illness since February 10 with bronchopneumonia. He and his brother Harry Hart founded the Chicago retail store in 1872, which grew into the firm.
A note states that Mrs Petty died several months ago and she was never questioned about the murder, leaving the case unresolved and pending investigation.

In Alexandria Virginia on February 22 Mrs Mary G Powell widow of a Confederate officer unveiled a tablet marking the grave of an unknown Revolutionary War soldier. The unidentified Colonial soldier lay in the burying ground beside the old Presbyterian meeting house and was re interred after being found in a long forgotten grave.
Looters trying to break apart white chests at an American mission found they contained honey bee hives. Chinese soldiers momentarily surprised by buzzing stings and stubborn hives, learning the loot was defended by insects.
Sleet and snow storms across the Midwest crippled communication lines in Nebraska Kansas and Minnesota with six deaths in Minneapolis and St Paul. Lincoln reported five above, Chicago saw light snow and falling temperatures as the weather worsened across the region.
Judges at Crawfordsville's county high school declamatory contest named Jeanette Karel of Washington the top declaimer and winner of the silver loving cup. She took first in humorous and placed with Leota Welte in dramatic, with additional contestants named from Kalona Crawfordsville Wellman and others.

Washington high school scored four and a half points in the University of Iowa field house meet last evening, the best showing by a Little Six team. Oak Park of Chicago won the meet. Piper of Washington tied for second in pole vault at eleven feet. McAvoy placed third in the low hurdles, and two Oak Park runners won a dead heat. Quinn and Atkinson ran solidly in the quarter, McDaniel showed form in hurdles but did not place. Washington athletes improved over the recent dual with Iowa City University.
R L Bunce vice president of the First Iowa State Trust and Savings bank of Burlington formerly of Washington chaired the program and banquet at the group convention. Fred Skola Kalona is secretary and C M Keck Washington is on the executive committee. Over 200 bankers of southeastern Iowa attended. L A Andrew state superintendent of banking gave one of the principal addresses.
Seats for the junior high operetta and orchestra concert at the high school next Tuesday evening will go on sale and be reserved at Phillips and Hebner drug store on Monday. Miss Norma Becker, physical training teacher at the junior high and grade schools, oversees the dancing groups for the operetta.
Santa Rosa California reports a Baptist church measuring 100 by 60 feet with a 400 seat capacity. The structure was built entirely from timber sawed from a single redwood tree, using only two thirds of the log and leaving 60 200 shingles unused.
