Chicago police conducted raids across the west side Bad Lands arresting more than 120 suspects. Seventeen federal prisoners were cited for trial. searches yielded a shotgun, revolvers, and a list of alleged gang members. In St Paul Minnesota two patrolmen John Schultz and Fred A Poitsch were killed in the residence district while investigating a large automobile incident tied to a robbery spree which left seven hold ups in under three hours. Des Moines February 28 The state owned Iowa Capitol tunnel extending from the statehouse to railroad tracks has been boarded up after years of no use. Built for electric light wires and heating pipes the tunnel was never used and processing costs stopped after the state contract with a commercial light company cut the bill by about 1000 dollars monthly. Officials say the tunnel remains sound but likely will stay unused for years while a new heating and power plant may be considered in the future.

Jefferson county grand jury meets in Fairfield Iowa and is expected to immediately take up the Bruey case. John Bruey a 55 year old farmer is charged with the slaying of Sam McNeese an 18 year old farm boy who confessed to relations with Bruey’s fourteen year old daughter. Bruey allegedly shot McNeese at the Bruey home after the daughter’s confession and then informed the sheriff. Indictment is considered certain and Bruey is expected to stand trial near the first of the March term of court.
