Congress moves toward repeal of margarine taxes after a conference substitute imposes stricter labeling on colored oleomargarine. The measure, still pending approval by both chambers, also ends taxes on white oleo and various packaging and franchise fees while preserving a restaurant service rule for triangular pats.
A series of seven Lenten services from 1 30 to 1 45 p m will air on KXIC starting Friday February 24 The Washington Ministerial association presents the program with churches including Associate Presbyterian Baptist Christian Evangelical and Reformed Methodist Church of the Nazarene Presbyterian and United Presbyterian The brief programs feature religious music and a devotional by different pastors with speakers listed for each date scheduled through April 7 with Dr William Grossheim Rev Milo Phillips Rev C F Gieselman Rev Basil McRee Rev Tom Polk Dr Fred Miller and Dr George Kerr on various Fridays.

Budapest reports claim United States and Britain sought to block the Vogeler trial as the Budapest peoples court convicts Robert A Vogeler 15 years and sentences two co defendants to death while four receive five to 18 years. The Szabad Nep alleges involvement by American and British legations and the British consul in the espionage ring.
Funeral services for Charles W Gray were held yesterday at 2 o clock at the Jones funeral home with Dr Fred B E Miller in charge. Casket bearers included H J Brenneman LeRoy McGraw Benny Schantz Golia Milles William Miller and Ernest Jarrett. Burial followed at Ela Grove cemetery.
Graveside services for Patrick Vincent Murphy infant son of William K Murphy and Vernita Tellin were held at Woodlawn cemetery this afternoon at 2:00 o clock Rev George Kerr led the service Jones Funeral Home arranged the services The infant was 12 hours old born Tuesday evening at 6 00 o clock Surviving are the parents one brother Michael William age 2 and maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Vince Tellin of Washington
Riverside report says Harley Ford sold his West Main Street residence and wood working shop to Gail Murdock of Conesville with possession expected around March 15. Ford will move to Alabama near Alberta, about 5 miles from Pensacola, and plans to continue woodworking and carpentering.
As soft coal supplies shrink nationwide, New York Virginia Pennsylvania Illinois and other states declare emergencies. The United Mine Workers strike halts 10 000 Illinois members joining nationwide action. Seizure powers are granted in Virginia and New York, rationing ordered in Cleveland and other areas, and mines face potential government seizure.
A fire at Princeton University destroyed the wiring in an 18,000,000 volt cyclotron used in the Los Alamos bomb project. The blaze, extinguished by 10:30 a.m., left only the large horseshoe magnet of the $400,000 machine. Officials expect six months to rebuild. all physics work was halted.
WOI TV began regular programming at 6 30 p m with Richard Hull of Iowa State College welcoming about 600000 potential viewers. The station plans 6 30 to 9 30 p m broadcasts nightly through Saturday and then a Monday to Friday schedule next week. It will televise NBC ABC CBS and Dumont network shows when licensed and include Iowa State educational programs.
Tow ers hotel in Glens Falls New York was destroyed by fire in early hours. Ten people were reported missing and ten injured as crews from four towns battled the blaze amid freezing weather and a snowstorm. Hotel manager John Delaney was in critical condition with burns. Police found 22 guests registered, others may have escaped or be cared for elsewhere.
The Iowa conference of Community Chest campaigns raised 2,487,363 last fall, $32,000 more than the prior fall. The average contribution was 2.82 dollars, matching 1948 and 1947 levels. Campaigns exist in 48 Iowa cities and towns and one in Franklin County. Leo M. Sweesy of Mason City is president.
Iowa commerce commission schedules March 24 public hearing in Davenport on Ward L Adrain Tipton’s request to operate a motor freight line in eastern Iowa. The plan covers routes linking Davenport Bettendorf Tipton Rochester Springdale West Branch Downey Lone Tree and other intermediate points across Washington Cedar Johnson Muscatine and Scott counties.
President Truman urged free nations to pool strength to meet communist aggression with force if needed. He voiced support for UN atomic energy control and stressed peace through freedom and self government, while warning of an imperialistic Soviet-led threat.
