Mrs Pauline Kimball Partridge 99 oldest Iowa City resident died in an Iowa City hospital. She was the oldest living former University of Iowa faculty member in the speech department from 1880 to 1890.
Sioux City Charles R Mc Kenna began as a shipping clerk 24 years ago and is now elected president of the Johnson Biscuit Co in Sioux City. The appointment marks a long service rise within the firm.
Governor Kraschel signed papers asking Kansas to extradite Vincent Sherben, wanted as a parole violator from the Iowa State Reformatory at Anamosa. Sherben, paroled while serving a sentence for stealing an automobile in Grundy County, has been serving a term at Leavenworth, Kan.
Mason City director Burroughs A. Waltrip of Radiochapel announced the 17 day fast ended as the $10,990 needed for extra equipment and additions was raised. Staff said a Mason City woman donated $5,990 and a further $3,199 was raised later that day.
Des Moines reports the Hotel Kirkwood taproom design complies with planning and building laws. Plans show a powder room for women, labeled powder room not gun powder, submitted to the city building department for review.
In Des Moines a young wife and mother of two told Municipal Judge Don Allen she desired her husband William Reese be jailed. Reese, who served seven days of a 14 day sentence for assault and battery, faced a public offense charge by his wife. The judge asked the wife what she wanted done. she replied she believed more jail was needed and that he should return to jail to stop bothering her.
Professor Charles Bundy Wilson, 76, a long time member of the State University of Iowa faculty and chair of German, died after a heart attack. He joined the faculty in 1888 and reached retirement age in 1902 but continued teaching two classes for enjoyment of the work.
Six people escaped unharmed as a $10,090 home burned in Fenton the Fen ton residence of Walter Ohm. Ohm went to the basement to light a laundry stove and his bathrobe caught fire. In attempting to smother the blaze he knocked over a kerosene can which ignited kindling.
In Council Bluffs ten year old Gwendolyn Warnecke shouted that she preferred not to live with her aunt or mother. Municipal Judge Harry Robinson ordered the custody transfer to her aunt Mrs. Edward Feekin, noting the girl is too young to decide and will follow the court order.
Des Moines reports indicate Iowa would add a quarter million WPA workers if Congress approves extra funds. Officials say the move aims to secure federal aid while filtering to those in need, with March WPA roll updates anticipated and relief certifications rising across counties.
Jerry Carris son of Mr and Mrs EF C Carris has accepted a civil service appointment in the United States war department and is assigned to the hydraulic laboratory in Iowa City. He leaves today to begin mechanical work in the laboratory with the Carris machine shop family.
Sacramento news: Secretary Henry A. Wallace calls the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1928 a landmark law and outlines a six point program. The plan includes soil conservation, national acreage allotment, storage loans, marketing quotas with penalties, release of corn during shortages, and crop insurance for the farming industry valued at about 600 million dollars annually.
The Iowa Poultry Producers' Marketing association will relocate by March 1 from North Iowa avenue near the Temple building to the former Joe Simmering tavern room in the Odd Fellows building. Roy Randall will oversee Washington county operations with four trucks planned. The Ottumwa meeting elected H. Hazen president, P. G. Warder vice president, A. J. Beeer secretary treasurer, and Earle Libe joined the executive committee. The cooperative system begins Monday Feb 28.
Walter Johnson, picked up last week by Sheriff H M Putnam at Mercer Pennsylvania on a desertion charge, is being sent back to Mercer. He had planned to work on a farm in Annte worth. The 20 year old native man traveled with a Mercer deputy and a girl friend Virginia Riley who accompanied him without a warrant.
Poultney Vermont February 22 4 H club members use homemade hypsometers and calipres to illustrate planting thinning and clearing of trees on a half acre lot.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Bennell and their two children from Kalona visited Sunday in the home of Mrs. Bennell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E B Messer.
Washington shoppers plan mass-dollar purchases on Thursday February 24 as the first Dollar Day of 1938. The event is sponsored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce with many local businesses taking part, as advertised in a special eight page Journal section.
Sixteen men and ten tractors attempted to move a 24 by 60 foot building once a Titus store. Ground proved too soft and uneven with logs breaking as tractors pulled, leaving the structure near its original site. Jobin L. Johnson plans another method to relocate and remodel it into a garage.
DD J Gates and his son Leslie of southwest of town were injured while shelling with a five horse power motor driven sheller. Gates’ coat snagged pulling him face down and Leslie’s hand slipped into the chain drive causing bruises and a punctured hand. Gates remained at home recovering.
Washington county republican women will convene Friday at 2 30 p m in the G A R hall. The program will include talks from people who understand the present situation.
Charles R. Forsen of Iowa City an auditor for the Iowa state board of assessment and review will visit Washington on March 1 and 2 to assist state income taxpayers with returns at the courthouse. In late March he will work full time from the Johnson County recorder’s office in Iowa City and will accept written inquiries there.
Des Moines reports a brief warm spell returns with light snow across Iowa. Snow fell several inches in parts, with Keokuk spared and most readings 15 to nine degrees above normal. Travel slowed in places as plows went out, and the heaviest fall occurred in western Iowa.
