Des Moines will host two talks by Ezra Day president of Cornell University on March 1. He will address Des Moines high school principals and college officials and Cornell University Society central Iowa.
Des Moines tavern owners report the once famous bootleg beer is fading as a favorite. A drop in demand prompts some establishments to raise prices by 25 to 30 cents to offset lower sales.
Eldora-Erio Cobb a 42 year old farmer from southwest of here died in a physician's office while awaiting treatment for diabetes. He suffered a heart disease fatal outcome before the doctor arrived.
Des Moines Industries operating in the Mt Madison penitentiary earned profits of 385120 for the state in the fiscal year ended last June 80, compared to a loss of 8436 the preceding year. The state auditor's office reported. The audit included recommendations for changes in involved and overlapping phrases of the investment setup and accounting methods.
Frank Miles editor of The Iowa Legionaire announced the 1938 Iowa American Legion state convention will be held in Davenport from August 8 to 10. About 750 delegates attended Sunday meetings of the two day sessions for Iowa post commanders and adjutants.
Des Moines area notes two Iowa pupils among national winners in a Quill and Scroll contest. Maurine Morse of Dubuque earned recognition in copyreading while Ruth Pauley of Mason City led in advertising. National winners receive a bronze key and a chance at a 590 dollar scholarship.
Newton Hartwell Zachary, 16, a farmer northwest of Prairie City, was injured when alighting from a bus near Prairie City. He fell into the path of a passing car and suffered a compound fracture of the right leg, severe shoulder injury, head lacerations, and a mild brain concussion. He is in Skiff hospital in serious condition.
Joan Leeney of St Marys Riverside won the Washington county spelling contest after earlier taking the oral title. She defeated Martha Hines of Pleasant Plain in the final by spelling biennial correctly and gangrene and herbarium, with Ralph LeMoine pronouncing the words. Judges were Winnie Beer Edna Witting and Cathryne Caldwell. A collection of 3.76 to fund her trip to the State spelling contest in Moines on April 23 was raised.
Several hundred attendees gathered at a Washington Methodist church for a union service to raise support for the A. M. E. congregation. Rev. W. M. Berry delivered a sermon on vision and freedom, highlighting historic leaders and the 1816 founding of the A. M. E. Church. The offering aims to reach 300 dollars for the year, with additional gifts expected from Sunday school and pledges. The program featured pastors, choir numbers, and solos, with strong musical emphasis marking the event.
Courthouse offices will be closed Tuesday in observance of Washington's Birthday with no public business proceeding.

A lone British airman dived to strike a Japanese carrier at anchor near the Canton river mouth Hong Kong. He said three bombs hit the ship, which had raided Canton twice and then steamed toward Formosa. Canton endured sirens anti-aircraft fire and explosions as casualties were feared in the hundreds.
Rev. Vernon Carter announces the Christian church in Fort Madison will host the Fort Madison Choir next Sunday evening for a sacred music concert. The originally scheduled youth program is moved to the following Sunday, March 6.
Mexico City reports an American embassy briefing on a Japanese mission heading to discuss a possible naval base on Mexico’s west coast. Tokyo also seeks a concession to develop iron reserves in Michoacan state as part of the talks.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at L. A. Jones funeral home led by Dr. Arthur Atack. Pallbearers included Orie Turner Ray Guest James Cunningham Joe Wright L. J. Varney and Clarence Kolosick. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery.
Harley O Loughlin was laid to rest Saturday at the L A Jones funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack officiating. Pallbearers included Howard McCall Clarence Jackson George Ditt mer IT Rothschild Ralph Scott and Sherm Crone. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery.
C I O organizer C D Shaeffer of Des Moines leads a committee to form a union at the state insane hospital in Clarinda. Hospital superintendent Dr R D Smith says he is open minded about the move. The institution employs 175 workers.
Sheriff reports a Washington fraud case where three trucks bought shelled corn and oats for cash from a local dealer. After departure, the loaded grain exceeded the scale weight, with no license numbers on the rigs. The men claimed to represent a Missouri grain firm, but no such dealer exists in that town. the vehicles headed east.
Levees along the Arkansas river broke sending thousands to higher ground while floods nearby abated. More than 200000 acres of land were inundated in Arkansas as cold weather worsened the misery of flood victims. Texas floods were easing and refugees began returning home.
Changes occur at Blanche's Beauty Nook with Elizabeth Shannon named new manager effective immediately. A new hair stylist is hired to report next Monday, replacing Lucille Reed who moved to Cedar Rapids. Margaret Peggy Sullivan, formerly of Atlantic, will operate the shop with years of experience.
Sioux City sheriff W R Tice and chief W W Akers issued an alert about trucks used to commit grain fraud. Deputy Leo Naughton described a trailer trick that shifts weight to rear axles to inflate grain purchases, citing a Sioux County case of about 381 extra bushels.
The Al len Patterson family home on the Floyd Timmons farm northwest of town burned last night after they returned from Wellman. The wash house also burned and only a washing machine and a few personal items were saved. Harvey Meek brought the farmers' fire truck but the blaze was already beyond control. Insurance should cover losses on household goods.

In Washington on February 21 the House approved a bill extending the Frazier Lemke farm mortgage moratorium act for two years. The Senate already approved the measure, which must return for concurrence in minor amendments before sending to the White House.

Ames honors Prof H J Gilkey head of theory and applied mechanics for his role in the Boulder dam project. Gilkey served on the concrete research board and his portrait will hang in the Barcroft library at the University of California.

Four residents of an apartment above the Cranston furniture store and funeral home in Van Horne Iowa were seriously burned when a blaze damaged the business, with losses estimated at 20000 dollars. Injured include EE Cranston 50 Mrs Cranston 48 Robert Cranston 25 and Katherine Cranston 14. Dana Cranston 17 escaped unharmed. The fire began around two this morning and the cause was undetermined.
