Birmingham February 22 Mine disaster at the Virginia pits leaves 100 families destitute as rescue crews recover fifty bodies. Many victims mangled beyond recognition. some survivors found, one barely alive. Ambulances move bodies to Bessemer. coffins in short supply.
Des Moines Feb 22 George Noble a hack driver testified for the defense that he conveyed Mabel Scofield from a downtown hotel to several city points and that she returned to the Thomas home about 8 o clock The testimony undermines the states theory that Thomas poisoned the girl in the forenoon and hid her body until nightfall Edward Alquist testified that Scofield was alive at noon corroborating Nobles account EB H Skinner first formed an alibi by driving for a funeral the day the state says the body was concealed though he did not see Thomas
LaFerte Ind February 22 Representatives of the Elkins Weidner syndicate of Philadelphia were in town probing traction gas and electric plants. It is understood negotiations are pending for the purchase and merger of the Chicago and South Shore Rail.
A proposed agreement links the Laporte Gas and Coke company, Michigan City Traction company, LaPorte Electric company, Lake Cities Electric company and others. The plan would unite lines and plants in Laporte and Michigan City under one framework with a value likely over 2 million dollars.
Chicago February 22 Helen M Gougar a prohibition and suffrage advocate told the Henry George association celebrating the twenty fifth anniversary of Progress and Poverty that she favors assassination. She argued on the Russian situation that under certain circumstances it is more direct than war and warned of killings depending on who triumphs among liberals priests and the czar.
Jefferson City Mo Feb 22 The Missouri lower house passed the Godfrey bill repealing the breeder's law which allowed poor selling at horse races in enclosures The measure would ban poor selling at races anywhere in the state whether held inside or outside state boundaries
A counterfeiting outfit was found in a penitentiary cell along with counterfeit coins. Convict Walter Turpin is said to be connected with the gang. The coins are well made yet feel greasy and are light in weight.
Clifton Heights Pa Feb 22 An ton Schultz nearly killed while sledding on Kellyville hill. He walked up the incline pulling his sled when a large double decker struck him squarely, tossing him several feet. A second sled struck him on ground breaking his nose and causing other injuries.
The Cunard line unveils its first turbine steamer Carmania at Clydebank in front of a large crowd. The 21,000 ton ship spans 678 feet with eight decks and space for 2,656 passengers and 450 crew. Expected speed is 21 knots.
Washington reports Senator Beveridge and Senator elect Hlemenway of Indiana met with the president to discuss federal patronage in their state. They were joined by H. C. Starr, chairman of Indiana's state executive committee, and James T. Goodrich, head of the state Republican committee, for the talk.
One hundred machinists at the Milwaukee plant of International Harvester go on strike in protest against the piece work system. It is alleged the system would cut wages by 10 to 20 percent.
Hazleton Pennsylvania February 22 three hundred miners at the Drufton colliery Coxe Brothers and Company went on strike in support of drivers who quit after two helpers were suspended. The helpers refused overtime unless paid for the extra work.
Boston February 22 Announcement that James Coolidge Carter a leading New York lawyer who died recently left Harvard University two hundred thousand dollars The gift is described as practically unrestricted regarding its expenditure and use by the university.

Thomas R. Paxton of Gibson county received a mysterious letter from Evansville Indiana containing 4 in currency labeled conscience money. A note claimed the funds belonged to the estate of Jorge Jerald, a Princeton merchant who died ten years ago. Paxton settled the Jerald estate believing the money came from a creditor.
In Washington on February 22 a bronze bust of Washington, replica of the original marble by David De Angers, placed in the Capitol rotunda and unveiled. The replica, like the original, is a gift of the citizens of France.
Madison Wis February 22 The supreme court decides Equitable Life Assurance Society is not required by Wisconsin statutes to distribute its surplus among policyholders in the dispute with Insurance Commissioner Zeno M Host.
Berlin on February 22 reports Lieutenant General Von Trotha who commands German troops in Damaraland German South West Africa requests that no more dogs be sent for war purposes. A daily notice to this effect is being sent off. The dogs tried so far have proved of little use.
Washington February 22 The senate in executive session confirmed Byron J. Price of Wisconsin to be deputy auditor for the navy department.
Chicago market notes from February 22 1908 and 1905 show hogs receipts 33000, prospective receipts 30000, prices light to rough from 84 60 to 85 00 for light to mixed packers and higher for shipping grades. Cattle receipts around 19000, with beef and cows and heifers at varied levels and stockers and feeders listed. Markets described as steady to strong for hogs in 1908 and mixed to weak for cattle in 1905 with price ranges across several classes.
In Topeka Kansas a senate committee considers probes into beef grain implements and lumber while Kansas producers vow to push anti trust actions against the Standard Oil company The rise of anti pumping gas bills and support from Illinois Colorado Texas Oklahoma and California frame a broad campaign as the U S Supreme Court upholds Kansas antitrust law in a coal case and Topeka moves to press suit.
Charlotte Michigan Feb 22. N A Shaw and Celia Shaw wed again in this city after Shaw’s 28 year Klondike absence and Celia’s belief he abandoned her leading to divorce. Shaw returned with gold nuggets and formed a partnership with Homer Ford of Albion to buy a rich mine. Now they start a second Klondike trip.
In Charleston LiL on February 22 George Gill, 23, attempted to board an advancing east bound Big Four passenger train. He missed his footing and was crushed under the wheels, dying at the scene. His widowed mother survives. Gill reportedly faced trouble and was said to be fleeing arrest when the fatal accident occurred.
Fort Wayne Indiana February 22 petitions circulate urging Governor Hanly to pardon John Godfrey Jr who was found guilty of manslaughter Saturday. It is reported that about 10000 signatures may be obtained as sentiment holds the jury erred in its verdict.
Wing for West Virginia Charleston W Va Feb 22 A resolution to adopt a state flag consisting of a laurel branch in bloom in a field of white with a border of blue and yellow has been adopted by the house of delegates. West Virginia has never before had a state flag.
