Birmingham reports a boiler and mine collapse in Virginia mines near Birmingham. One hundred five workers entombed after timbers gave way. Relief trains and physicians rushed to the scene as rescuers work slowly toward possible survivors.
Four men died and fourteen were injured when a stationary boiler exploded at Provident Coal No 1 mine near St Clairsville Ohio. The fatalities include Williams Adams a UMW local president and engineer Eli Minty. Several others suffered severe injuries as workers gathered in the boiler house during installation of a new boiler. The accident occurred in a newly completed shaft area under wet cold conditions.
Two passengers were killed and one seriously injured when a Chicago Rock Island and Pacific train wrecked near Wiota Iowa. The deceased are Henry Melcher of Illinois the residence not listed and Rev J R Johnson of Harlan Iowa. The seriously injured is L E Kent of Morris Iowa.
A large carbonic acid gas drum exploded at Bishop & Babcock in St Paul Minnesota. Book keeper Alfred Keepe was instantly killed, while Henry A Vakrovits a laborer and another man were injured in the blast.
In Sycamore on February 21 8 year old Jordan Frieze son of Nora Frieze was accidentally killed by his 11 year old brother James. The boys were alone when James found a revolver and discharged it while removing a cartridge. The bullet struck Jordan above the left eye. Jordan was taken to Sycamore hospital but died without regaining consciousness.
In Dover Delaware on February 21 the key development in the senatorial stalemate was Speaker Denny's break with J Edward Addicks voting for Henry C Conrad a Union Republican. Denny's move shifts Addicks to the minority in the chamber.
In Birmingham on February 21 a special report states that only one body has been recovered from the Virginia mine where 116 miners remain entombed. Rescue work continues but hopes of finding survivors are gone.
Governor Pennypacker approves Indiana's request to extradite George Freeman wanted in Michigan City for burglary. The report also notes John Anderson and family shipping household goods to Maryville Missouri and Miss Hala Bradford traveling to Iowa City for eye treatment at the university hospital.
Chicago markets report opening with hog receipts 23000 yesterday and 28000 estimated for today. Prices show steady to mixed ranges with light hogs 4.55 to 4.87, mixed packers 4.65 to 4.95, and heavy shipping grades 4.65 to 4.75. Cattle and sheep also mixed with receipts 6500 cattle and 18000 sheep, market slow and generally steady for natives and western lambs with modest gains in certain classes.
President Roosevelt and Mrs. Roosevelt prepare to attend the inaugural ball at the Pension Building after the oath of office and address at the Capitol. Washington will be in gala dress as sightseers fill the city.
The forecast says Illinois and Indiana will be probably cloudy with moderate temperatures and southerly winds. Lower Michigan and Wisconsin may be partly cloudy with moderate temperatures and southwest winds. Iowa is partly cloudy with fresh southerly winds.
A premature dynamite blast at the Massachusetts Consolidated mine in Otonagon county, Calumet, kills David McDowell and seriously wounds Peter McGinn and another worker. McDowell dies after reaching the surface. McGinn loses both eyes and suffers severe injuries. Angletto Victoria, a 23 year old trammer from Italy, is killed in the Oscola Consolidated mine during the same incident.
The appeal court affirmed King Leopold by ruling Princess Stephanie and Princess Louise creditors entitled to half the late Queen Marie Henriette estate and half the king’s property upon the queen’s death. The lower court had held Leopold's marriage contract superseded Belgian law, a decision the appeals court upheld.
Joseph McGrath a New York stone cutter and Ireland native aged about 101 is dead of old age. He was an athlete in youth and left four generations totaling around 200 descendants.
Walter an Illinois attorney and former assistant under State's Attorney De Keen and governor, vanished from his city home amid fears he may have died by his own hand.
In Philadelphia on East Haines Street police found Sarah Smith 62 dead and brothers Benjamin 70 and Louis 64 in critical condition. Benjamin died at a hospital while Louis was taken to the alms house. Neighbors called the case strange as the trio had pensions still owed by their former employer and no food was found in the two story frame house.

Secretary Taft, after a cable consult with Governor General Wright in Manila, decides to immediately use the Cooper bill provision authorizing bonds to defray Philippine public works costs. A circular will be issued outlining details.
The plan calls for issuance of 2.5 million dollars in bonds bearing 4 percent interest for thirty years. The Philippine government would have an option to redeem at the end of ten years.
Little Mary Dreibilbies a two year old child born to Chinese parents in the province of Kiang arrives in the United States aboard the Siberia. Adopted by missionary Carrie Dreibilbies who served five years in Big King she is en route to Pennsylvania to visit her dying father.
In Detroit on Feb 21 a crowd in the Avenue gallery mistook a cry of fight for fire. A frenzied melee broke out as men surged for exits. Two boys involved in the scuffle were arrested for disorderly conduct.
Watter A. Modlin faced a hearing after a desperate attempt to kill his wife. He was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and sent to jail. The family plans no further admission of the young woman to the home.
In Moscow Henry Victur MacClelland a Huntieh lecturer at the commercial academy was assassinated amid alleged coercion of boys for money. In Ossining Frank Rimieri and Adolph Henly were executed at Sing Sing prison for murders of Jack Pinto and Mrs Mary Kauffman respectively.
Joseph Schrage former director of the City Savings Bank who failed three years ago died at age 64. His health collapsed at the bank failure and his family attributes his death to a broken heart leaving a note of sorrow in Detroit.
Sioux City February 21 James Chalmers head of South Dakota Agricultural college has been chosen president of South Dakota University Vermillion SD to succeed Professor Garrett Croppers who recently resigned.
Des Moines Iowa Feb 21 D M Way of Marengo Iowa who was injured in the Melbourne Iowa wreck on the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railway a week ago has died in a Des Moines hospital.

An east bound Erie Railroad train jumped the track three miles east of Paterson New Jersey. One girl Miss Grace Matthews of Suffern New York was killed. Many injured suffered cuts and bruises. Most victims were residents along the Erie line between Middletown and Suffern.
