Legion Commander Denounces VA Stand on Veterans Benefits
American Legion national commander J. Addington Wagner accused the Veterans Administration of using a misleading cost estimate to defeat a veterans benefits bill before Congress. He claimed the VA projected 77.2 billion dollars in costs through 2000 and called the estimate phony and harmful to veterans. Wagner spoke at the Iowa Legion leaders conference criticizing perceived bias and questioning why such criteria aren’t applied to other tax funded programs. He noted defense spending and tax cuts for industry also receive such consideration. The commander said the government would spend about 1.5 percent of national income on veterans next year, similar to 1890 levels.
