Mack MacDonald 55 of Harlingen must answer a policeman's summons for walking his elephant Opal in Times Square. Obstruction of a public sidewalk is charged after Opal, confined in a van, developed nerves before a TV show appearance.
Washington officials say Israel’s chances for US arms assistance, potentially including jet planes, have improved after events of the past three days though no decision has been made. The tank shipment to Saudi Arabia sparked criticism and an embargo later lifted, with Rep. Emanuel Celler accusing oil interests of influencing policy via Herbert Hoover Jr.
A 29 year old Davenport man named Raymond D. Jacobs, who escaped from Fort Madison State Penitentiary, was arrested in a hotel telephone booth in Kansas City after making a collect call to his girlfriend in Fort Madison. The call cost about $3 and led Iowa police to trace him and alert Kansas City authorities. His girlfriend had been watched since the escape last Wednesday.
The Iowa adjutant general says the National Guard recruiting drive is extended through Wednesday. Capt Harold Stephens reports Saturday’s open house was successful with several enlistments and says another open house will be held tonight at the armory for public viewing and information.
Senate Republican Leader Knowland predicts a very close fight over the Democratic farm bill that would restore rigid high price supports. He doubts the full Senate will back the Agriculture Committee version after Eisenhower vetoed the natural gas bill, while Ellender says the bill will pass in nearly the same form. Aiken counters, predicting a presidential veto if the bill advances.
Preliminary plans to straighten the Highway 92 curve at the Rex Smith corner east of Washington are reportedly well developed. State highway commission surveyors were working at the site, long a dangerous spot on the highway, a few days ago.
A Marine Corps court of inquiry mid today probed a clerical mixup that misidentified casualties from a Marine transport crash near Niles California. The incorrect list listed passengers as crew and caused families to learn of deaths via radio before official notification.
Vernon E. Weaver 34 died Sunday in Veterans Hospital Iowa City after a month illness. Services set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kalona Christian Church with Rev. T. R Van Der Veer to lead. He was born November 22 1921 in Keota and served in World War II. He operated a dragline then a clock repair shop in Kalona before retirement. Survivors include wife Ella Gingerich one son Ken one daughter Christine his parents four sisters and two brothers deceased. Memorial fund established.
Plans for the annual Trade Show sponsored by the Jaycees at the Washington Armory near completion. The event runs March 13 and 14 with a feature style show on the first evening and Leo and His Pioneers appearing the second evening. Merchants will display spring styles with booths along both sides of the armory. several local businesses already exhibit. A few booth spaces remain available.
Jaycee‑Farmer banquet at the VFW hall will announce the local Outstanding Young Farmer of 1956. Willard Palmer, last year's county winner, is a state finalist, as 3,200 nominees were screened nationwide. A panel of five agricultural experts will choose four national winners.
The four man Senate committee led by Senator George decided to renew public hearings into the $2,500 contribution to Senator Francis Case. Witness Donald Ross may testify next. Neff linked to Superior Oil is under scrutiny. The probe may broaden to general campaign contribution patterns while Gore's Elections subcommittee moves ahead with its own inquiry.
A French DC6B operated by Transports Aeneas Intercontinentaux crashed into a desert hill near Cairo International Airport while approaching for landing. Of 64 aboard, 52 passengers and 9 crew died. 12 survived. Pilot Capt. Charles Billet survived and described the low approach. Initial counts varied. final tally set at 61 aboard. The disaster was the third major aviation crash in three days.
Des Moines report shows 190830 tickets issued for traffic violations in 1955, up from 164989 in 1954. Of these, 119050 were faulty equipment, 28384 warning tickets, 43396 summonses. Drunken driving arrests fell to 1192 from 1268, fines totaling 652734 paid to county school funds.

Gary E. Hoffman aged two, son of Set and Mrs. Carl E. Hoffman of Des Moines, fell into a six foot cesspool behind the family quarters in Yokohama. Rescuers searched nearly four hours. he was pronounced dead on arrival at the 544th General Dispensary with minor forehead lacerations.
John Schmidt of Ottumwa won first place in Area 5 Toastmasters speech contest at the YMCA in Ottumwa. Schmidt will represent Area 5 at the District 19 contest in Ames on May 5.
The U S Marine Corps corrected its casualty list naming six Iowa Marines killed in a military air transport plane crash on Friday night. Earlier two Iowans on an erroneous list were later confirmed alive. The six listed include Pvt Terry G Maxwell Mason City Pvt Larry Horton Des Moines Pvt Salvador R Hernandez Oelwein Pvt James L Mulholland Clinton Pvt Rodney J Nelson Davenport Pvt Robert L Offenburger Oelwein.
Four persons were killed in Iowa highway accidents over the weekend, lifting the 1956 toll to 97 from 75 at the same date last year. Walter Arnold Lux, 22, a Manchester farmer, died. his six month old son Larry was fatally injured in a two car wreck four miles southeast of Ryan. Charles Wolfe 43 of near Hopkins and Wolfe’s wife Dorothy 42 and Kathleen Lux 21 were hospitalized at Delaware County Hospital. Wolfe walked four miles to summon help after the crash.
President Eisenhower will remain in Thomasville, Georgia through Friday before returning to Washington. He arrived last Wednesday and plans a quick Washington trip for a personal engagement. Press Secretary Hagerty denied a Friday stock market timing for a second term decision. President expects to decide by month end. Hagerty touted a potential February 29 news conference. The visit included a quail hunt as he awaits responses to a surplus farm commodities offer from Western European nations.
Abraham Leibovitz, 62, who faced an assault with intent to murder charge after a clash with City Councilman Joseph Katelman, died Sunday from burns suffered when he set fire to gasoline-soaked clothes Friday. The fight also injured Katelman and his brother over property.
