Adler Fights Off Kidnaper in Chicago Hotel
Adler publisher and president of the Lee group of 12 midwest newspapers fought off a kidnap attempt in a Chicago hotel hallway. Charles Clyde Phillips, about 20, was arrested after a trunk equipped to smuggle a victim was found in his room along with a revolver and adhesive tape. Adler, 61, sustained head injuries but escaped and reported two men were following him.
