Iowa lawmakers report deadlock in the conference on tax revision and liquor bills after a week of talks. House and Senate clash over a flat rate sales tax while a new beer law and old age pension study unfold.
In 16 years Montana counties cut their debt by 15 million dollars according to a Montana Taxpayers Association survey.
A Santa Monica reader voices admiration for King Leopold of Belgium and sympathy for his people. The note mentions Mussolini and Italy, praising their leadership, and references Chancellor Dollfuss of Austria in a casual radio remark.
Milburn McKay announces instrumental soloists and ensembles chosen after months of tryouts for the sub district music contest to be held at Weill man on March 22. Names include Betty Jones violin solo Kathryn Vacha viola solo Jule Humble clarinet solo and more with ensembles led by Cath arine Masson Jean Moore and others.
Funeral services for Thomas J. Harvey were held yesterday afternoon at the Methodist church with hundreds in attendance. The service was led by Dr. P. F. C. Witingman and Dr. W. W. Bowers, with a mixed Methodist choir and Miss Mary Hunter at the organ. Knights Templar provided a guard at the casket, and Washington lodge Masons assisted at the grave service in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Irv Gallagher and six others.
In Washington on February 20 President Roosevelt said he cannot approve veterans bonus legislation at this time. Speaker Rainey announced that the petition for a House vote reached the required 145 signatures, setting a vote for March 12. Texas Rep Patman signed, bringing signers to 130 of 145 needed to consider the bill.
Howard Dawson remains in Washington County jail awaiting arraignment on a charge of illegal transportation of intoxicating liquor. Deputies reported finding a quantity of alcohol and whiskey in his car or possession at the sheriff's office.
A severe blizzard hit New England and eastern states with 17 deaths in the region and major travel disruption. Sixteen inches of snow piled in New York City drifts up to four feet, delaying air mail and Army operations. Three ships were reported in distress off Massachusetts coast and several lives were lost in Pennsylvania.
Postoffice department orders from Washington DC declare Washingtons birthday a holiday on February 22. No city or rural mail will be delivered and no window accommodations will be available.
The county declamatory contest arrives Wednesday at 7 30 in Washington high auditorium with seven contestants from all county high schools except Wellman. Separate preliminaries occur February 28 at Washington for the three classes humorous oratorical and dramatic with winners advancing to Riverside.
BROOKVILLE PA Feb 20 Ten aged widows of civil war veterans died in bed when a frame hospital building of the Pennsylvania Memorial Hall burned. The fire started from wiring and smoke choked the patients while firemen struggled to reach them.
Four townships named corn-hoe committees joining those announced Saturday and Friday. Iowa township lists Navy as chairman with Flynn as vice chair and Liebengath Thomann and Schneider as members. Brighton township names Stout as chairman with ratz Tucker and Groves and Kesse as members. Cedar township cites Patterson chairman with Smitt as vice chair and Knapp Dusenbery and Young. Franklin township lists Wright chairman Gates as vice chair with Libe Booth and Pill id Melvin as members. Dutch Creek township committee election date is set for Friday.
Washington high school edged Sigourney high 26 to 21 in a low scoring game marked by cold shooting and post four games in four days fatigue. The preliminary contest went to Sigourney 20 to 19 thanks to a late rally led by Tucker Washington.
Body moved to Table Grove Illinois with Mrs Martha Jane Brady's son in law Bruce C Stewart after her death Sunday. Funeral services to be held at Clemmens chapel this afternoon. Mrs Stewart, daughter, traveled from southeast of town following death at her home to attend the funeral.
The public is invited to attend the Washington birthday program at the K. C. ball Thursday evening February 22. The program features music by Shields' orchestra and a speech segment.
KEOKUK IOWA FEB 20 Police say they solved a baffling extortion case when 12 year old Robert Russell confessed to sending a letter demanding 100 in old bills to W C Tanke manager of the J C Penney store. Vernon Saxon a Chicago handwriting expert identified Russell from writings of Keokuk school children. He was arrested and confessed to the sheriff and federal officers.
Washington Feb 20 A House appropriations bill carries 59 406 460 for the Agriculture Department to create a new port and expand duties claimed by Secretary Wallace who says he is short handed and must rely on the weather service chief as acting secretary The measure notes the department lacks sufficient senior officials and urges staffing to fulfill its mandate.
Washington Y M C A boys defeated Ottumwa in a close swim meet last night by 68 to 64. Ten swimmers from each town swam with David McCartney coordinating the Washington team and included rostered boys Howard Little Joan Knott Warren Cox Don Mitchell Dean Hansen James Owen Ronald Lowash John Coulter Roberto and Omer Palmer.
Des Moines reports the state of Iowa filed notice to appeal against Insurance Commissioner F D W Clarke after a Polk County ruling favored Clarke. The appeal challenges council authority to probe him over the Modern Brotherhood of America merger with Foresters of Canada and to mandate a hearing.
Miss Hilda Brown attends an illustrated lecture by sculptor Lorado Taft at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City this evening. The Art department notified her as a former student and invites the public to attend while tickets last. Taft will discuss Great Art of the Renaissance.
P A MacLamore addressed Rotary members praising progress of colored citizens. He linked liberty to Abraham Lincoln's act freeing over three million slaves and urged a path titled Going Some Place for Good. The talk highlighted enduring obstacles from slavery to full citizenship and was well received by Rotarians.
Mr and Mrs Ted Dalton have gone south for a month with plans from St Louis further south possibly to Florida G W Stone of Columbus Junction is filling in at Mr Dalton's place Ray Minick has completed a beauty course at Paris Academy Cedar Rapids and returned Dickie Broek son of Mr and Mrs Paul Broek is ill with pneumonia aged between 8 and 9 years

The CWA plans up to 10000 for reconstruction and 42 hires, with aviation expansion including 700 plane funding and 10000 builds, boosting private hobby flying.
The board of supervisors announced a new CWA work schedule at county quarries starting tomorrow with Frank Trotter and his gang at Grace Hill, followed by Dick Godfrey’s group, and Bob West’s crew at Bailey quarry. Russell Frink of the state highway commission says a large fifty man team will work Wednesday and Thursday, with possible changes after this week.
