Easter Seals Pony Express Ride planned for March in Southeastern Iowa
Saddle club riders from Southeastern Iowa join state peers for a two day Pony Express fundraiser to deliver Easter Seal contributions to Camp Sunnyside. Jim Willey of Fairfield named as first rider with Pete Peters driving the project from Belmond. The plan calls 8 to 10 riders covering about 100 miles each, with a barbecue and country music festival at Camp Sunnyside on March 29 to draw public support for crippled children aided by Easter Seal sales. Trailers with crippled children may accompany the routes and radio contact is planned to boost interest.

Marines seize hill as 41 NVA troops die in Dewey Canyon
UPI reports Marines killed 41 North Vietnamese and captured heavy artillery atop a hill near the A Shau Valley, with two Marines dead and 10 wounded in a three hour bunker battle. The action capped a week of intense fighting in Operation Dewey Canyon, part of the broader push to disrupt Communist control along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. US casualties for the week totaled 197 dead and 1,103 wounded. overall Vietnam losses rose to 31,759 dead. Artillery from both sides fired into the Demilitarized Zone as a reconnaissance plane drew fire and reported two red fireballs.

New York hospitals perform historic mass transplant
A single donor’s organs were transplanted into six patients at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases and New York Hospital. The donor, a 57 year old man who died of an inoperable brain tumor, provided a heart kidneys eyes and liver. The operation marked the first time a heart transplant occurred with donor and recipient in separate hospitals.
