Freeport Illinois reports John Lewis 45 of Winfield died from carbon dioxide fumes while asleep in his produce truck. The incident occurred during a winter morning as his nephew Walter Singsheim was nearby.
A man who spent the night in a parked truck outside a filling station woke ill and was found to have a non serious condition. Police reported no further danger.
The senate passed a bill increasing Waterloo city councilmen pay from 250 to 500 dollars and sent it to the governor for approval in Des Moines.
The measure cleared with a 41 to 1 vote. Senator Sanford Zeigler of Fairfield provided the lone opposition.
Hanover New Hampshire J P Heyer dahl reports a snow sculptor using a skier figure at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival reached a height of 40 feet 3 inches claiming the tallest snow man ever made and drawing attention from spectators.
United Press reports Britain and the United States consider steps to curb Japan’s access to strategic materials amid rising Far East tension. Harry S. Hopkins in London for Roosevelt review, with Japan attacking French Indochina and massing air forces for a Pacific drive.
To Farm Institute Right Washington men plan to leave tomorrow morning for Des Moines where they will attend the national farm institute in session there Friday and Saturday. The group includes County Agent J. W. Chandler President Amos Stout of the Farm Bureau O. W. Schmitter of Rubio A. L. Duensing of Washington Richard Stephens of Crawfordsville who compose the Farm Bureau legislative committee Joe Knotek Wayne Norman and Carl Oldfield
R Everett Glasgow and Alfred H Johnson of Washington community boarded a Burlington Trailways bus at 6 11 am to Des Moines for year of training under the selective service act. They are among seven Washington county men sent so far, with three more volunteers reported.
The 1940 census reports the average dollar value of U.S. farms at 5518 dollars, reflecting farm wealth nationwide.
The 7th Annual Greater Washington Edition presents Washington Iowa as a thriving trading, entertainment, education, and religious hub. It lists department coverage from insurance to hardware, local services, schools, firms, and notable businesses across six sections with detailed business categories and area landmarks.
The Business and Professional Women's Club hosts Mardi Gras at City Hall on February 25. Doors open 7 50 pm with a full program of singing dancing baton twirling and entertainment by local artists including Rita Peck. Proceeds fund club activities and there will be a door prize and various concessions.
A forty voice choir directed by Edith M Shields will present a Sunday afternoon program at 4 oclock at the Presbyterian church. Three soloists Doris Forney Reich Harold Reeves and John Lloyd Hughes will perform. An offering will be taken to replace choir robes. Everyone is welcome.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong states Saturday February 22 is a holiday. No mail deliveries and stamp window hours are eight to ten in the morning. Court house offices and banks will close for the Washington's Birthday observance.

Nominations indicate a lively spring election with seven contenders for three board of education seats. Candidacies due by noon February 28. Filed papers include R. E. Arthur, Mrs. A. E. Baldrige, Clarence Logan for three-year terms and B. F. Bostwick Jr. for the one-year vacancy, joining two incumbents Dr. W. J. Dwyer and Harry Ramseyer seeking re-election. S: Kiesey also seeks the short term, with filing overseen by Ralph W. Thompson, secretary of the board.
The Journal will conduct a random telephone survey tomorrow Friday between 2 and 7 PM with some calls Saturday morning. Respondents will receive a small gift from the Evening Journal and answer which Thursday ad they found most interesting. Three ladies will conduct calls from a special office arranged by L. E. Travis of the Iowa Continental Telephone Company.
Senator Gerald Nye of North Dakota accuses 30 senators of readying a vote for war and says the United States will be at war within 30 days after the British Aid bill passes. He cites speeches by Josiah Bailey Claude Pepper and Warren urging intervention if needed to block a German victory.
John G. Kirkpatrick, 83, died at the county hospital from pneumonia complications after smoke inhalation from a basement fire at 314 South Marion Avenue last Friday morning. Firefighter Floyd Kerr rescued him. sister Alice Kirkpatrick also suffered injuries. Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 pm at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Rev. George Kerr officiating. Survived by sisters Miss Alice Kirkpatrick and Mrs. G. R. Dillon of Washington.
The Washington County Ministerial Association will meet on Monday March 3 at 10 o'clock in the YMCA. County Agent J W Chandler will be the guest speaker after a postponement from the previous week.
Temperatures stayed one degree above zero at the minimum, a departure from two previous nights at three and six below. Forecasters expect further moderation in the coming days with a likely rise by Saturday.
