Gayten Andrews, 18, of Nevada, fell from a new highway bridge south of Story City and struck a brace before plunging into the Skunk River. Rescue crews pulled him from the water and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Chariton report says Andrew Bell Jr., 15, in critical condition at Yocum hospital following a hunting accident. A gun carried by companion Ellsworth Wolsington, 16, discharged accidentally. Bell sustained a gunshot to the left leg. Wolsington used a shirt as a tourniquet and carried Bell more than a quarter mile to a farmhouse outside the city.
A. J. Blakely of Grinnell was chosen president of the new Town State Sheep Association, the parent body for four state sheep units. Other officers include George Sanders of Rockwell City as vice president, A. V. Brady of Des Moines as secretary and treasurer, with directors J. L. Bane of Durant, Leroy Getting of Sanborn, Don Pullin of Waterloo, and Blakely and Brady named as officers alongside Souders.
Mr. and Mrs. George Glisphil were wed Saturday in Waterloo. Sunday afternoon Mrs. Glisphil, 18, was shot in the head and taken to the hospital. her husband was jailed for investigation after claiming the .38 revolver went off while monkeying with it.
IOWA CITY The Iowa building and trades council at a special state meeting opposed the WPA because officials pay little attention to qualifications of skilled laborers while qualified union men remain unemployed.
Walter Bauman, 46, of Cherokee, died in a Marshalltown hospital from injuries in an auto collision during a snow storm. He was unconscious after the crash and placed in an oxygen tent. Death was caused by a basal skull fracture and other injuries.
In Council Bluffs Jack Fuller fifteen was shot in the back by companion John Schmid sixteen while hunting along the Missouri river bank. Fuller walked home two miles to shield Schmid, claiming a stray bullet. doctors said severe internal bleeding occurred and Schmid admitted he was laying the gun down.
Mrs. Munston Pond, 34, of Waterloo, died from pneumonia caused by inhaling gas fumes after being found unconscious. Her 19 month old daughter Carlys, sister Beulah Laird 49, and brother in law Milton Laird 60 were exposed but improving and out of danger.
The Washington post office announced today a new three cent stamp commemorating the Golden Gate International Exposition which opened Saturday. Postmaster M C DeLong said it will appeal to local stamp collectors for its unusual design.
Franklin Pierce McCall, condemned for kidnapping James Bailey Cash, had his execution postponed to Friday to allow defense teams to appeal to the U S Supreme Court. Governor Fred P. Cone ordered the delay, not a stay, as McCall faced the electric chair amid last minute legal maneuvering. In the same cell block, Tampa poet Paul Freid Bunge awaited his death for killing his wife and two children in a death pact that he did not complete.
Harold McEvoy aged 29 pleaded guilty in district court to blackmail related to an extortion attempt of $15,000 from Charlie Ward president of Brown Bigelow Co. Judge Hugo A Hanft deferred sentence until after the trial of Matthew Stegbauer 31 also from St Paul, who is McEvoy's alleged confederate. Stegbauer faces trial a week from today.
Mrs. C. B. Howell a Washington restaurateur died after a brief illness in Maquoketa. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church Washington Tuesday at 2 30 p m with burial Elm Grove. Body to Washington after Maquoketa service. Survived by two sons Nathan L. Burris and Carlous Burris of Maquoketa. sister Mrs Myrtle Meyer. brothers George Young of Washington and Clyde Young of Minneapolis. Funeral arrangements by L A Jones.
The Iowa legislature is asked to appropriate 6 million dollars from the general fund to equalize school costs between rich and poor areas. The plan, by a House special committee, would fund 2 million the first year and 4 million the second, affecting about 350000 elementary and 120000 high school pupils.
Postal service announces no mail deliveries on Wednesday February 22 in observance of George Washington's birthday. General delivery window opens from 9 to 1 am for customers to claim stamps and parcels.
Prime Minister Chamberlain announced in the House of Commons that Britain will dispatch a trade mission to Soviet Russia and northern capitals in March led by R. S. Hudson. The Moscow visit marks the first by a British cabinet minister since 1935. The trip follows Soviet Polish and Soviet Italian trade deals and a German push for a new Moscow commercial agreement.
Iowa may establish a state zoo with two candidate locations under study. Des Moines area is favored by Senator A Claire Dewey for high visitor traffic, while Ledges State Park at Boone offers central location and abundant visitors and a natural setting for a zoological exhibit.

Iowa's two percent retail sales tax brought in 3 520 498 for the July 1 through Sept 30, 1938 quarter. The report notes a drop from 3 628 816 in 1937 and cites a general business slump, while showing more retailers filing returns and gains in food, lumber and building, professional and service, public utility, and unclassified groups. County collections are listed for the two quarters.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 33 are asked to meet this evening at 7 o clock at the YMCA instead of the Methodist Church. Mr and Mrs W J Roudabush returned this morning from Bloomfield where they spent the weekend at Delbert Foster home.
Dr. Donald Mallett of Iowa City will speak at the Washington county University of Iowa alumni banquet in the Presbyterian church after a chicken dinner at 7 p.m. He is assistant dean of men and has reformed the housing service. The Quad rangle singers will perform with Mallett, led by director Hugh Cockshoot and accompanied by Ralph Lambert. Alumni and their spouses are urged to obtain remaining tickets.
Firefighters were summoned this morning to extinguish a roof fire at the Sherm Crone residence 315 West Madison. The blaze likely started from chimney sparks, tearing a sizable hole in the roof before being controlled.
Investigators say a corn car with unset brakes triggered the Tennant Iowa collision that killed passenger train engineer Henry Miller and fireman A. D. Sellars and injured 22 others. Federal and state teams will meet in St. Paul to probe the freak accident amid multiple rail incidents in the Chicago and Great Western line history.
Police pursue Townsend Davis a 40 year old gardener after Anna Louise Switzer 8 disappeared following a playground outing. Davis reportedly drove away with the girl in a 1927 sedan at her aunt Jennie Purcell's account stating the mother asked for her removal alleging mistreatment.
